Cross Country: ACU men win, MSU women finish second at South Central Regional
Abilene Christian won the men's race and Midwestern State finished second in the women's competition at the NCAA Division II South Central Regional at Live Oak City Park in San Antonio, Texas, to highlight the Lone Star Conference participants.
The ACU men and MSU women's teams along with ACU's Winrose Karunde and Loice Cheboi, West Texas A&M's Jeniffer Cherono and Texas A&M-Commerce's Tyler Tyndall advance to the NCAA Division II National Championships meet in on November 22 in Slippery Rock, Pa., by virtue of their finishes.
The ACU men dominated the field to win their eighth regional title in the last nine years. The Wildcats Julius Nyango won the individual championship in 30:10 with teammate Daniel Maina just one second behind him in second place. ACU finished 1-2-3-4 in the men's race to tally 31 points.
MSU placed three runners in the top 15 as the team's total of 94 points fell just six points shy of champion Missouri Southern. Senior Katie Stepp set a school 6,000-meter record with a time of 21:46 and was joined on the all-region squad by freshmen Kayla Hendrix (22:11) and Lindsey Pate (22:17).
ACU's Karunde won her second straight individual championship, covering the course in 20:45, while Cheboi was third in 21:21. WTAMU's Cherono finished fifth with a time of 21:37.
A&M-C's Tyndell finished fifth, covering the 10,000-meter course in 31:09 to lead the Lions.
