Cherono, Nyango earn weekly awards
West Texas A&M's Jeniffer Cherono and Abilene Christian's Julius Nyango were named Lone Star Conference cross country Runner of the Week for their performances last week.

Jeniffer Cherono, West Texas A&M University, Jr., Iten,
Kenya
Cherono took first-place honors in the College/Junior
college division of the Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree, held in
Stillwater, Okla. Cherono, winning an event for the second
consecutive week, clocked a time of 18:31 over the rigorous 5
kilometer course. She has now earned two victories and a
third place finish in her three competitions this season.
Male
Julius Nyango, Abilene Christian University, Sr., Aldai,
Kenya
Nyango finished eighth last Saturday to help the Wildcats
to a fourth-place finish at the Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree in
Stillwater, Okla. Nyango covered the 8000-meter course in
24:23 to pace the Wildcats, who are the second-ranked team in NCAA
Division II cross country.

Abilene Christian
The men's team dropped in the national rankings from No. 1 to No. 2
as ACU and Adams State (Colo.) swapped places in this week's United
States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association
poll...The Wildcats ran to a fourth-place finish last Saturday at
the Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla., finishing
behind Oklahoma State, Northern Arizona and Indiana...Julius Nyango
was eighth and Daniel Maina was ninth in the overall individual
standings, leading a group of five Wildcats who all finished in the
top five...Serge Gasore (22nd), Amos Sang (31st) and freshman
Charles White (32nd) were ACU's other finishers...Sophomore Winrose
Karunde finished 25th and senior Loice Cheboi was 42nd last
Saturday at the Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater,
Okla...Karunde covered the 6000-meter course in 22:08, while Cheboi
finished in 22:35...the Wildcats finished tied for 19th in the
overall team standings in the University Women's division.
Angelo State
ASU's women place 13th in the college division at the Oklahoma
State Jamboree... ASU's men placed fifth in the college division at
the Oklahoma State Jamboree.
Cameron
An ailing Cameron Aggie cross country team took to the course last
weekend against a number of elite teams at the prestigious Oklahoma
State Cowboy Jamboree. A bout of mononucleosis prevented Cameron's
top two runners, senior Josh Stewart and freshman Mark Merritt,
from competing but the Aggies still managed an 11th place finish in
the College Division's 27-team field. The race was 8 kilometers.
CU's total team score was 293 points and their total team time was
2:20:35. Cameron's average individual time in the race was 28:07.
Following Khelalfa was senior Mudasar Haidat who finished in 29th
place with a time of 27:18. Two seconds after Haidat at 27:20 was
freshman newcomer Edwin Chelashaw in 31st place. The Aggie runners
participate in another well-known, prestigious event in their next
scheduled meet. On October 18 Cameron travels to Fayetteville,
Arkansas, to compete in the annual University of Arkansas Chile
Pepper Festival. The Aggies took 26th in the 36-team field at the
event last season....Mohamed Khelalfa briefly stepped into the CU
cross country team's top spot last weekend at the Oklahoma State
Cowboy Jamboree while Cameron's top two runners were out battling
mononucleosis. Khelalfa shouldered the added pressure and turned in
a great performance as he finished 8th overall in the College
Division at the prestigious event. Khelalfa's time in the
eight-kilometer race was 26:11. His time is Cameron's fastest
eight-kilometer time of the entire 2008-2009 season.
Central Oklahoma
UCO couldn't count in the team standings for the second straight
race as the Bronchos had only four healthy runners at the Cowboy
Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla...Sophomore Alina Istrate finished
eighth and junior Evelyn Berko 15th in the 5,000-meter race that
attracted 218 runners in the college/junior college
division...Alina Istrate finished eighth at the prestigious Cowboy
Jamboree in the college/junior college division, finishing the
5,000-meter course in 18:59.
East Central
John Sutrick led East Central to a 12th place finish in the
Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree last weekend as he clocked in at
26:11 in the 8,000-meter race. His 75th place overall finish led
all ECU runners. Sutrick has led the Tigers in all three races this
season and has steadily improved his 8k time each time out. He
finished fifth at North Texas a few weeks ago and was second in the
ECU Tiger Chase on Sept. 13. He was also half of the winning tandem
at the Midwestern State 8-mile relays on Sept. 6. His efforts this
season have helped ECU to a No. 24 national ranking by the United
States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association
Division II Top 25 poll this week. It is the first national ranking
for the Tigers since 2005. ECU is ranked fifth in the South Central
Region. Sutrick is a two-time Lone Star Conference Academic Runner
of the Year and three-time Academic All-American.

The Lions finished 14th overall and fifth among Division II
teams. Competing in a field of primarily Division I teams,
the Lions were led by junior Tyler Tyndell in 38th place in 25:42
and right behind him was freshman Cody Hughes in 26:01 (52nd) in
the 8k race. A&M-Commerce junior Robert Reed finished in
26:13 (59th) and teammates junior Gerardo Delafuente and sophomore
Brandon Womack were separated by 19 seconds in 27:31 (107th) and
27:50 (121st), respectively. Logan Kelly was 146th in 29:39 and Ray
Moreno was 152nd in 32:16...At the Cowboy Jamboree, the Lions women
finished 24th. The women were led by sophomore Kate Donovan, who
was 78th in 21:20. The next three runners for A&M-Commerce were
separated by 43 seconds. Freshman Gabrielle Greer was 129th in
24:00. The next two runners - Savannah Brookins and Mindy Solario
were separated by 14 seconds and two places. Brookins in her
collegiate debut was 140th in 24:29 and Solario was 142nd in 24:43.
Junior Holly Langford was 152nd in 26:51.
Texas A&M-Kingsville
The Javelinas finished in 12th place out of 13 teams at the Texas
Lutheran University Invitational... The Javelinas finished in ninth
place at the Texas Lutheran University Invitational...Kiya Dandena
finished in 17th at the Texas Lutheran University 8k to lead the
Javelinas. He crossed the tape in a season best
27:16.2...Jessica Martinez was the Javelinas' top finisher at the
Texas Lutheran 6K. The took home 15th place in a time of
25:37.5...
West Texas A&M
The Buffs placed 10th out of 27 teams competing at the Oklahoma
State Cowboy Jamboree, held Saturday in Stillwater, Okla...Jose
Velazquez paced the Buffs with a 23rd place finish and a time of
27:04 over the 8k course. Thomas Harris also finished among
the top 50 runners. placing 48th with a time of 27:49.... The Lady
Buffs placed ninth out of 26 teams competing at the Oklahoma State
Cowboy Jamboree last weekend. Jeniffer Cherono took top individual
honors for the second consecutive weekend, winning the 5k race with
a time of 18:31. She has now earned two victories and a
third-place finish in her three meets. Other top finishers
included Kristie Hartsfield, who finished 14th while Belinda
Castanon was 52nd.
