2008 LSC Volleyball Championship begins



LSC Volleyball Championship (Nov. 13-14-15, 2008 in Canyon, Texas)

Thursday, Nov. 13

Match 1: No. 3 Abilene Christian 3, No. 6 Angelo State 0  (25-12, 25-15, 25-23) - Photos - Box Score

Abilene Christian swept Angelo State, 3-0, to begin play at the 2008 Lone Star Conference Volleyball Championship.  The Wildcats dominate net play forced 23 Rambelle hitting errors in sets one and two before ASU adjustments resulted in a close final set.  ACU finished with 11 total team blocks including one solo and five assisted efforts by LSC Defensive Player of the Year Shawna Hines.  Jennie Hutt and Jordan Schilling led the Wildcats offensively with 12 and 10 kills, respectively.


Match 2: No. 2 Tarleton State 3, No. 7 Texas A&M-Commerce 0 (25-15, 25-18, 26-24) - Photos - Box Score

Tarleton State put together a comeback in the third set for a 3-0 sweep of Texas A&M-Commerce in the second quarterfinal game at the 2008 Lone Star Conference Volleyball Championship.  The TexAnns trailed set three 17-20 before scoring nine of the next 13 points to top the Lions, 26-24.  Shay Gracy led the Tarleton attack with 12 kills, while hitting at a .429 clip.  The TexAnns put together a strong block with 13 total team rejections including one solo and eight assists from Gracy.

Match 3: No. 5 Texas Woman's 3, No. 4 Midwestern State 1 (25-14, 21-25, 25-22, 25-16) - Photos - Box Score

Texas Woman's topped Midwestern State in four games in the third quarterfinal match-up at the 2008 Lone Star Conference Volleyball Championship.  The Pioneers controlled set one with an efficient offense and solid defense.  TWU hit .333 in the first set, while forcing nine MSU hitting errors.  The Mustangs won set two by turning the tables with 13 kills and a .242 hitting percentage, while forcing 11 Pioneer attack errors.  Katie King and Sharon Schaffner led the TWU offensive effort with 15 and 13 kills, respectively.


Match 4: No. 1 West Texas A&M 3, No. 8 Central Oklahoma 0 (25-17, 25-9, 25-15) - Photos - Box Score

West Texas A&M recorded the third sweep of the 2008 Lone Star Conference Volleyball Championship with a 3-0 win over Central Oklahoma.  The two-time defending champions hit .376 to cruise into the semifinals.  Melissa Harper led the offensive production with 14 kills and just two errors for a .545 hitting percentage.


Friday, Nov. 14
Match 5: Abilene Christian 3, Tarleton State 2 (25-21, 25-20, 22-25, 11-25, 15-13) - Photos - Box Score

Abilene Christian topped Tarleton State in a back-and-forth five set battle in the first semifinal on Friday evening at the 2008 Lone Star Conference Championship.  The Wildcats won the first two sets, while the TexAnns won the next two to bring on game five.  ACU prevailed in the final set, 15-13, to advance to the championship game Saturday night at 7 p.m.  The Wildcats had four players record double-digit kills led by Shawna Hines with 16 put-downs.

Match 6:
West Texas A&M 3, Texas Woman's 0 (25-22, 25-12, 25-) -Photos - Box Score

West Texas A&M, the two-time defending LSC Champions, swept Texas Woman's in semifinal action on Friday night to earn a spot in the title game Saturday night.  After edging TWU in the first set, WTAMU turned up the offense to win the next two sets.  LSC Offensive Player of the Year Laura Prinsen paced the Lady Buffs with 13 kills, while Melissa Harper added 10.

Saturday, Nov. 15
Match 7: West Texas A&M 3, Abilene Christian 2 -Photos

West Texas A&M earned their third straight and 14th overall league title with a hard fought five-set win over Abilene Christian in the Lone Star Conference Volleyball Championship game.
