Volleyball: Six tabbed for weekly honors

Six student-athletes earned Lone Star Conference Volleyball Player of the Week honors for their performances last week, league officials announced. 

LSC Players of the Week
Offensive
Melissa Harper, West Texas A&M, Jr., Middle Blocker, Peoria, Ariz./Peoria
Harper enjoyed another solid performance last week in the Lady Buffs' final three regular season matches against Lubbock Christian, A&M-Kingsville, and Tarleton. She tallied 31 kills in 55 attempts for a hitting percentage of .473. She led the team in blocks, posting eight block assists and four solo blocks in three matches, averaging 1.50 blocks per set. Harper's best match was against A&M-Kingsville where she recorded a hitting percentage of .692, putting down nine kills in 13 attempts with no errors. She also tallied one solo block and two block assists against the Javelinas.

Adrienne Taylor, Angelo State, Jr., Opposite Side Hitter, Luling, Texas/Luling
Taylor tied or earned match-high honors for kills in both of ASU's matches last week. In ASU's 3-0 sweep of East Central, the 5-11 junior banged out 11 kills to lead a trio of ‘Belles as Angelo State clinched its first LSC Tournament berth in four years. Taylor tied for match-high honors with eight kills against Southeastern Oklahoma as the ‘Belles won their 20th match of the season. For the week, Taylor had 19 kills, one service ace, 15 digs and four total blocks.

Defensive
Sharon Schaffner, Texas Woman's, Sr., RS, Henrietta, Texas/Henrietta
Right side hitter Sharon Schaffner paced the Pioneers defensively against MSU and CU as she led the team with 32 digs and seven total blocks in the two matches combined. The versatile senior also chipped in offensively with 14 kills and 44 attacks.

Sara Contreras, West Texas A&M, Sr., Libero, Amarillo, Texas/Amarillo
Contreras reached new career milestones last week as the Lady Buffs swept Lubbock Christian, A&M-Kingsville, and Tarleton. Contreras recorded 39 digs last week, averaging 4.33 digs per set. In the match against A&M-Kingsville, Contreras set a new WT record for career digs with 2,151, breaking the previous record of 2,150 set by Brittani Bell in 2005. She added 15 more digs against Tarleton to bring her total to 2,166 total career digs.

Setter
Allison Schreiber, Midwestern State, Sr., Setter, Windthorst, Texas/Windthorst
Schreiber paced the Mustangs to a pair of Lone Star Conference road wins last week over Texas Woman's and Texas A&M-Commerce by piloting the MSU offense to a .255 attack percentage. The senior from Windthorst averaged 12.29 assists per set, while also helped out on defense with 3.14 digs per set. Schreiber notched her ninth double-double of the season in a sweep of Texas Woman's on Thursday with 36 assists and 16 digs before leading the Mustangs to one their best offensive days of the season on Saturday. She distributed double-figure kills to five different players while directing the offense to a .313 team hitting percentage with 48 assists.

Katie Rickwartz, West Texas A&M, Jr., Setter, Canyon, Texas/Canyon
In the Lady Buffs' three outings last week, Rickwartz tallied 99 total assists, averaging 11.0 assists per set. She also contributed two service aces, one solo block and four block assists. Rickwartz also tallied eight kills and led the team to a hitting percentage of .345. Her best match was against A&M-Kingsville, where she recorded 34 assists and led the team to a record setting .476 hitting percentage. Rickwartz still leads the Lone Star Conference in assists, averaging 11.27 assists per set.
