LSC announces Track & Field weekly honors
Four track and field student-athletes have been recognized with Lone Star Conference Athlete of the Week honors for competition last week, league officials announced today.
LSC TRACK & FIELD ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
LSC Men's Track Athlete of the Week
Daniel Maina, Abilene Christian University, Jr., Distance runner,
Nanyuki, Kenya/Ngumo High School
Maina extended ACU's winning streak in the 3000 meter
Steeplechase at the Penn Relays to three straight years as he won
the event last Thursday with a time of 8:40.46. ... Maina's time is
an automatic qualifying time for next month's NCAA Division II
track and field championship meet, and it is the top time in NCAA
Division II track and field this season. ... Maina's time, in fact,
is the second-best collegiate time in the country this year, just
behind the 8:38.33 turned in earlier this month by Luke Gunn of
Florida State. ... Maina has also automatically qualified for the
national meet in the 1500 meters, and is a provisional qualifier in
the 800 meters. ... Former ACU standout Nicodemus Naimadu won the
steeplechase at the Penn Relays in 2006 and 2007.
LSC Men's Field Athlete of the Week
Davy Manga, Abilene Christian University, Sr., Triple Jumper,
Paris, France/Lycee Pierre Menoles
Manga finished second in the triple jump Saturday at the
Penn Relays Carnival, extending his own NCAA Division II
season-best mark in the event to 53-6.25. ... Manga, last year's
outdoor national champion in the triple jump, was topped by TCU's
Jonathan Jackson on his final jump of the competition. ... Manga's
mark is the second-best collegiate mark in the nation in 2008.
LSC Women's Track Athlete of the Week
Chrystal Ruiz, Angelo State University, So., Hurdles, Lakehills,
Texas/Bandera HS
Ruiz recorded the top time in the 100-meter hurdles for
the Rambelles this season as she placed fifth in the event at the
North Texas Twilight Invitational on Thursday. She recorded a
personal best time of 14.68 in the event.
Co-LSC Women's Field Athlete of the Week
La'Shara Jefferson, Texas A&M University-Commerce, Jr.,
Throws, Lancaster, Texas/Louisiana-Monroe/Lancaster
HS At the Mean Green Twilight, last
Thursday, she won the discus with an improvement on her
NCAA-provisional mark with a throw of 159-4. The throw is the
second-best currently in Division II.
Laryssa Hice, Angelo State University, Fr., Jumps,
Aspermont, Texas/Aspermont HS
Hice placed third in the high jump at the North Texas Twilight
Invitational on Thursday with a personal best jump of 5'3". Her
mark was the best by a Rambelle in the event this season.
