Tennis academic awards announced
Abilene Christian claimed the Academic Player of the Year awards as Ryan Hudson was the pick on the men's side and Meagan Brown took top honors for the women to highlight the Lone Star Conference tennis academic awards announced Friday by league officials.
Hudson earned Academic Player of the Year acclaim for his work on the courts and in the classroom. He was joined on the men's team by Midwestern State's Travis Stegner and John Svard, East Central's Colin Helton and Southeastern Oklahoma's Danilo Hiraoka and Marcos Freitas.
On the women's side, ACU's Brown took Academic Player of the Year honors for her success on the court and in the classroom. She led the team which also included her teammate Irene Squillaci, Tarleton State's Melanie Zilles, Central Oklahoma's Dominika Kovacikova, SOSU's Deanna Brooks and Northeastern State's Emina Spirtovic.
In addition to these six men and six women being named to the LSC's All-Academic Teams, four men and 15 women were named to the LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll in recognition of their excellence in the classroom. In all, 31 student-athletes were distinguished.
To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.20 grade point average and have reached sophomore status both athletically and academically. The Academic Player of Year award and All-Academic Team are selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league's sports information directors voting on the basis of both academic and athletic achievement. All qualifying student-athletes not selected for the All-Academic Team are then named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll.
