TWU's Rachel Johnson

Four student-athletes earned Lone Star Conference Softball Player of the Week accolodes for their performances last week, league officials announced today.

LSC SOFTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
LSC North Hitter
Lindsey Voigt, Midwestern State University
Sr., Catcher, Wichita Falls, Texas/Rider HS

Voigt went 8-for-14 (.615) at the plate while slugging .923 with a double and a grand slam as Midwestern State split four games with Cameron last week. Voigt's second grand slam of the season helped the Mustangs to a 7-0 win in Game 1 Wednesday against the Aggies in Wichita Falls. She also stole three bases and scored three runs. Voigt is now tied with Kristen Stonecipher (2007) and Cheyanne Paschal (2007) for the program's single-season lead in runs scored with 45.

LSC North Pitcher
Katie Petersen, Midwestern State University
So., Pitcher, Plano, Texas/Plano West HS
Petersen neutralized the nation's top long ball attack and the Lone Star Conference's No. 2 scoring offense while going 2-0 last week against Cameron. MSU's sophomore ace from Plano limited the Aggies to one run on six hits while striking out 17 and walking just one batter in 17 1/3 innings for a 0.40 ERA. Petersen weaved a one-hit shutout in a 7-0 win over the Aggies Wednesday afternoon in Wichita Falls before allowing one run on three hits in a 4-1 victory on Saturday. Of Cameron's four hits, two were bunts, another was a double by Melissa Bour and the other accounted for the Ags lone run against Petersen - a solo homer by Megan Young in the fourth inning on Saturday. Young's homer snapped her scoreless inning streak at 28 as Petersen had not allowed a run since the fifth inning against Angelo State on March 28. Petersen, who came into the with NCAA Division II's sixth-best ERA including pitchers with more than 100 innings pitched, dropped her league-best ERA to 0.89. Petersen Petersen also slugged her first career home run in her victory on Saturday.

Co-LSC South Hitter
Kelli Gayle, Tarleton State University
Sr., SS, Angleton, Texas/Angleton HS
Gayle went seven-for-seven Saturday in a doubleheader win at West Texas A&M, including three-for-three in game one and four-for-four in game two.  She had four RBI in the second game Saturday and added another on Sunday when she walked with the bases loaded.  She was walked all four times she went to the plate on Sunday, and she still scored three runs.  She had one double and a triple on Saturday as well.  Her triple put the TexAnns ahead with a run before she scored on a single by the next batter.

Rachel Johnson, Texas Woman's University
Sr., Shortstop, Keller, Texas/Keller HS
Johnson enjoyed a big week at the plate for TWU. In five games played, she collected seven hits in 12 at bats for a .563 average. She also hit four home runs and piled up 19 runs batted in. Her best game came on Saturday, April 5, versus Texas A&M-Kingsville when she was 3-3 with two home runs, three runs scored, and five RBI's.

LSC South Pitcher
Brooke Saulters, Tarleton State University
Sr., P/OF, Waco, Texas/Midway HS
Saulters went 2-0 this weekend with both wins coming over West Texas A&M as she pitched two run-rule contests the TexAnns won in the fifth inning... Saulters threw a complete game shutout in game one of the series, allowing just three hits while striking out seven.  She then pitched a complete game on Sunday, allowing just two runs on four hits while striking out six.  The senior did not walk a batter in either game and faced just 18 batters in her first game and 19 batters in her second game.  Opponents hit just .194 off of Saulters this weekend.
