LSC announces weekly Softball awards
Four softball standouts have been recognized with Lone Star Conference Player of the Week honors for games played April 24-30. The awards were announced Tuesday by league officials.
LSC Softball Players of the Week
LSC North Hitter
Kristen Stonecipher, Midwestern State
3B, Jr., 5-9, Flower Mound, Texas
Stonecipher hit .385 with five hits and three RBIs, which included
a double and a homerun. She led the team in slugging percentage
(.692), and had a perfect fielding percentage last week in helping
MSU clinch the LSC North Division Title.
LSC North Pitcher
Katie Petersen, Midwestern State
P, Fr., 5-6, Plano, Texas
Petersen finished the week going 2-1 with a 1.05 ERA, and 20
strikeouts. She pitched three complete games, which included two
shutouts, in helping MSU clinch the LSC North Division Title.
LSC South Hitter
Ashley Bray, Tarleton State
OF, 5-1, Sr., Raleigh, N.C. (Phoenix College)
Bray completed her final regular season series as a TexAnn, hitting
.400 (6-15) over four games against the No. 4 Rambelles. She had
three runs scored and three RBI over the four-game span. Her
leadoff single in the fourth inning of game four, ignited an eight
run inning where the TexAnns went on to upset the Rambelles, 12-5.
Her performance helped the TexAnns earn a split series with ASU. It
was the first time all season the Rambelles had split a series.
LSC South Pitcher
Kari Galm, Angelo State
Jr., RHP, 5-7, San Antonio, Texas (O'Connor)
Galm tied the ASU single-season record for victories as she
collected two more wins this past weekend at TSU. Galm went 2-0 in
the regular-season finale with an 0.84 ERA against the TexAnns. She
posted a pair of complete-game victories and gave up just two
earned runs in 16.2 innings of work. In the first-game of the of
the weekend series, Galm tossed her fifth shutout of the season,
scattering six hits in her 24th victory of the season. In the first
game on Saturday, she collected her 25th win of the season, tying
former Rambelle pitcher and current assistant coach Claudia Lopez'
record for wins in a season set in 2003. In that victory, Galm gave
up just three hits and an unearned run in the 1st inning before
completing the pitcher's duel.
LSC Softball Notes
• TAMUK's Ma'lia Guerra extended her hitting streak to 6 games by hitting .500 during the four game series against ENMU. She had five hits in 10 at bats with two doubles a home run and three RBI. She had a slugging percentage of 1.000 and an on-base percentage of .500
- ENMU's Alex Mayo Otis batted .412 for the week, and notched at
least one hit in four of the six games played. In the final
doubleheader of the season, she batted 3-for-6 with a double, a
home run, two runs scored and two runs batted in.
- TWU's Rachel Johnson was the offensive catalyst for the
Pioneers in their four wins over WTAMU this past weekend. She went
4-13 (including a double) at the plate with 3 runs scored and 3
runs batted in.
- TSU's Brooke Saulters came into the second game of the series
to earn a save against No. 4 ASU. Over the four game span, Saulters
had a 1.11 ERA in 19 innings of work. She struck out 13 batters
while opposing hitters hit just .188 against her.
- ENMU's Nicole Dickson posted a 3.29 earned run average for the
week, and picked up two wins against only one loss. She tossed two
shutouts, with one coming against CSW, and her fifth of the season
in a 3-0 victory over TAMUK.
- TWU's Lindsy Russ-Keller did not allow an earned run in two
complete game wins over WTAMU this past weekend. On Friday she
struck out a season-high 11 Lady Buffs (and gave up just four hits)
in a 5-1 TWU victory. On Saturday, April 28, she limited WTAMU to
five hits in a 1-0 shutout win.
- Rachel Sill slugged .706 while helping SOSU to a 5-0 week. The
junior from Tuttle, Okla. hit .667 (10-of-15) with a double and a
homer while scoring five runs and driving in eight more. The
five-game hitting allowed Sill to raise her season average from
.289 to .325.
- SOSU's Carly Goodnight capped her career with a three-hit shutout and was involved in two others as she posted a 3-0 record. The Chandler, Okla. native pitched 14 scoreless over the final week of the season while allowing five hits, striking out 12 and walking two. Goodnight, who limited the opposition to a .106 batting average, became the second winningest pitcher in program history and finished her career with 64 wins.
