Men's Soccer: No. 3 Midwestern State back in national quarterfinals after 5-0 win over Fort Lewis

Kyle Kmiec and reserve striker Nick Auditore each had two goals each as No. 3 Midwestern State cruised to a 3-0 win over No. 2 Fort Lewis in the second round of the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship Saturday night at the MSU Soccer Field.

The Mustangs (19-2) advance to face No. 9 California State-Dominguez Hills, a 4-0 winner in the West Region Final earlier Saturday over California State-Los Angeles in the NCAA Division II national quarterfinals.

The Mustangs and Toros square off next weekend at Toro Stadium in Carson, Calif. The day and time is to be determined.

Kmiec gave Midwestern an early lead when he hammered a shot from four yards out after senior defender Robert Swann blasted a shot off of Fort Lewis keeper Zane Wells on a restart.

The Mustangs maintained the 1-0 lead into intermission before senior midfielder Estevao Alexander slipped a throughball to Ahmad Ihmeidan breaking free on the left wing. Ihmeidan collected the pass to beat Wells to the right upper corner of the net to give MSU a 2-0 lead.

It was then that senior goalkeeper Shawn Carr quite possible saved the match.

Fort Lewis forward Euan Purcell broke free on a through ball, but Carr made a one-on-one save to keep the Skyhawks at arm's length.

The thought wasn't lost on the Mustangs even after Kmiec knocked in his second goal of the match on a perfectly struck through ball from senior defender Brannon Calvert to give MSU a commanding 3-0 lead.

It was Auditore who threw the last dirt on the Skyhawks first with a 28-yard rocket from the left wing at the 81:35-mark, then with a breakaway at the 84:48 mark.

The Mustangs limited Fort Lewis to 13 total shots with four on goal to notch their 12th shutout of the season.

Fort Lewis finished the season at 18-2-3 with each of its losses coming at the hands of the Mustangs.
