SSC: MSU to host first two rounds of NCAA Division II Championship

No. 3 Midwestern State was selected to play in and host the first two rounds of the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championships Super Region One.

MSU will host the four-team event this Thursday and Saturday.  The Mustangs play Incarnate Word at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.  Fort Lewis and Metro State open the tournament at 4 p.m. with the winners of each game playing in the second round on Saturday at 5 p.m.

This is Midwestern's third-straight trip to the NCAA Division postseason as the Mustangs reached the regional finals in 2006 before making the national semifinals last season.  MSU also reached the national quarterfinals in 2002 and 2003.

Midwestern State is 4-0 against the regional tournament field this season.  The Mustangs defeated Incarnate Word 4-0 on Aug. 31 in San Antonio and 2-0 on Oct. 5 in Wichita Falls, but the Cardinals handed MSU two of its three losses last season.

MSU claimed a 3-2 win over Fort Lewis on Sep. 7 in Canyon and has won its last two meetings against the Skyhawks. Fort Lewis, however, knocked the Mustangs out of the 2006 postseason as the Skyhawks advanced 3-1 on penalty kicks after scoring the equalizer on a questionable goal late in regulation. Fort Lewis finished as national runners-up that season.

The Mustangs defeated Metro State 4-1 on Sep. 28 in Denver and is 10-0-1 all-time against the Roadrunners. MSU defeated MSCD 8-1 in the opening round of the 2007 NCAA Postseason Tournament in Canyon, Texas.
