NO. 2 ABILENE CHRISTIAN 41, MIDWESTERN STATE 17
ABILENE -- Abilene Christian running back Bernard Scott ran for 201 yards and quarterback Billy Malone threw for 262 and four touchdowns Saturday as the nation's second-ranked team primed itself for the NCAA Division II playoffs with a 47-17 whipping of Midwestern State at Shotwell Stadium, giving them their first outright Lone Star Conference championshpi since 1973.
The Wildcats (10-0) completed only the second perfect regular season in school history, joining the 1950 squad in that select company. The Wildcats will enter the Division II playoffs as the No. 1 seed in NCAA Division II Super Regional Four and will have a first-round bye. ACU -- which finished 9-0 in the LSC and 6-0 in the LSC South Division -- will host a second-round game on Saturday, Nov. 22, at Shotwell Stadium. The Wildcats last won a piece of the LSC football championship in 1977 when they shared the title with Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Saturday's game hung in the balance until early in the third quarter when the Wildcats put the game away. ACU trailed throughout most of the first half until a flurry of 10 points in the final 3:24 of the half sent the Wildcats to the dressing room with a 23-17 lead.
The ACU defense -- which gave up just 11 yards of offense in the second half -- forced a punt on the Mustangs' opening drive of the second half, turning the ball over to the Wildcat offense at the 5-yard line. Malone then directed a nine-play, 95-yard touchdown drive that was capped by Scott's only touchdown of the day, a 14-yard burst that made it 30-17 with 8:10 to play in the quarter.
After another ACU defensive stand, the Wildcats got the ball back with six minutes left in the third quarter and they quickly found the end zone once again. Malone capped an 11-play, 64-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown pass to Kendrick Holloway, making it a 37-17 game with 1:19 left in the quarter.
The Wildcats capped the scoring in the fourth quarter when Malone hit Justin Andrews with a 10-yard touchdown pass -- his fourth of the day -- and Matt Adams kicked a 30-yard field goal with 3:45 left in the game. Adams' field goal was his fourth of the day, tying the school record for field goals in a game and making him the only Wildcat placekicker in history to twice kick four field goals in a game.
The Wildcats finished with 571 yards of offense against the league's second-ranked defense (allowing 294.8 ypg), including 278 yards on the ground against a team that ranked first in the LSC and fifth in the nation in rushing defense, allowing just 64.9 yards per game.
NO. 9 WEST TEXAS A&M 51, NO. 19 TARLETON STATE 19
Flemming, McKnight top 100-yard rushing; Buff defense posts second shutout of season.
Canyon, Texas - The 9th-ranked West Texas A&M Buffaloes dominated #19-Tarleton State, 51-0, Saturday afternoon at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium in Canyon, Texas. The win should find the Buffs hosting a playoff game next week in the NCAA Division II football playoffs.
The victory improves West Texas A&M to 10-1, 8-1 LSC, 5-1 LSC South, while Tarleton State falls to 8-3, 6-3 LSC, 3-3 LSC South. It also marked the third consecutive season in which the Buffaloes have registered at least 10 victories, as well as being the first time since 1995 that Tarleton State has suffered a shutout.
The Buffaloes came ready to play, marching 80 yards on their opening drive, in 10 plays and taking 5:11 closing. Keithon Flemming, who had not played on the offensive side in three weeks due to an injured hand, made his return to the starting lineup, gaining 25 yards in the opening drive. His two-yard run gave the Buffs an early, 7-0, lead.
The defense then stepped up, stopping a Tarleton drive in WT territory as Jared Brock hit Tarleton quarterback Scott Grantham as he was attempting to throw, forcing a fumble. Buff cornerback Tae Evans scooped up the ball and returned it to the Buff 30.
From that point, the Buff offense again marched downfield with the drive ending with a James Chandler 18-yard field goal. The first quarter ended with the Buffs leading 10-0, but Tarleton driving deep into WT territory. But, the drive ended when placekicker Garrett Lindholm's 28-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right.
On the ensuing drive, he Buffs struck again, driving 80 yards in 11 plays over five minutes. Keith Null hit Carl Johnson running a perfect fade route for a 15-yard TD toss. Chandler 's PAT upped the Buff lead to 17-0.
Minutes later, the Buff's hit paydirt once again, as Wayne McKnight took the ball around left end from two yards out to up the WT lead to 24-0 with 2:31 to play in the first half.
On the next Texan drive, Caleb Randolph stepped in front of a Grantham pass over the middle, picking it off at the WT 36 yard line, securing the WT halftime margin.
At the half, the Buffs had amassed 306 yards in total offense.
The Buff defense continued its stronghold in the third quarter, as another Tarleton State drive ended with a short field goal attempt by Lindholm going wide to the right.
The Buffs proceeded to march 80 yards, with Null hooking up with Carl Johnson on a 3-yard slant route to boost the Buffs' lead to 31-0. The drive, which was kept alive by Null two-yard run on 4th and 1 from the TSU five, encompassed 13-plays, 80 yards and took 5:05 minutes off the clock.
Following a Tarleton punt, Null tossed a five-yard pass to Charly Martin on first down. The reception was Martin's 222 career catch, giving him the WT career reception record. Three plays later, Keithon Flemming raced on a 50-yard TD run, starting around left end then cutting back across the field, breaking four tackles en route to the end zone, to give WT a 38-0 lead.
Flemming, who finished his day following that third-quarter burst, concluded the day with 18 carries for 128 yards and two touchdowns.
Before the crowd of 9,416 could settle back into their seats, Darnell Johnson intercepted a Grantham pass at the WT 49 yard line. The pick was Johnson's team-leading fifth of the season. On just second play from scrimmage, Wayne McKnight burst up the middle for 57 yards and the sixth WT touchdown of the day. The PAT attempt failed, sending the teams into the fourth quarter with the Buffs leading, 44-0.
The Buff offense wasn't through, as Taylor Harris guided the Buffs 73 yards in 12 plays to another score, teaming up with A.J. Ruffins for a 13-yard TD reception, boosting the WT lead to 51-0.
Like Flemming, Null exited the game after the third quarter, having completed 22-of-26 passes for 227 yards and two TDs. The game also saw two WT running backs break 100-yards rushing, as Flemming finished with 128 while McKnight recorded 103. As a team, the Buffaloes gained 578 yards in total offense, their third-highest offensive output of the year.
Defensively, linebacker Jared Brock paced the team with nine tackles, including one QB sack, plus having the game's first forced fumble. As a unit, the Buff defense forced four Texan turnovers, marking nine takeaways in the past two weeks.
The Buffaloes will now wait until Sunday afternoon to see who they will face in the first round of the NCAA Division II football playoffs. The selection show will be televised by ESPNNews at 2 p.m. CST.
CENTRAL OKLAHOMA 24, NORTHEASTERN STATE 13
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (Nov. 8) - Undisputed
champions!
Central Oklahoma made sure it didn't have to share the Lone Star
Conference North Division title here Saturday afternoon, using a
dominating defensive effort and getting a clutch fourth-quarter
touchdown drive to subdue Northeastern State, 24-13.
It was the seventh straight win after a 0-4 start for the
Bronchos, who finished 7-4 on the year, 6-3 in the overall league
standings and a perfect 5-0 in claiming sole possession of the LSC
North crown.
"What a great tribute to this football team to be North Division
champions after the way this season started," first-year head coach
Tracy Holland
said. "Our players didn't hang their heads after we started 0-4 and
instead that just worked harder and trusted in what we were trying
to do.
"Today wasn't a pretty game and we struggled offensively, but our
defense came through once again and we won a tough football game.
This is a special team and it's been a special year."
UCO managed a season-low 215 total yards, but held the RiverHawks
to just 210 and forced six turnovers - five fumbles and one
interception - in the first half.
The Bronchos failed to take advantage of several of those
opportunities in taking a 17-10 halftime lead and NSU capped a
lengthy drive with a 34-yard field goal on its second possession of
the third quarter to pull within 17-13.
The RiverHawks were in business again early in the fourth quarter
after moving from their own 27-yard-line to the a first-and-10 at
the UCO 37, but NSU running back Prince McKinney slipped on a
fourth-and-one run and the Bronchos took over at the 28 with 10:18
left.
That's when UCO's offensive line took over, sparking a
ground-oriented touchdown drive that clinched the win as the
Bronchos went 72 yards in nine plays - eight of them runs -- to
take a 24-13 lead with 4:07 remaining.
Jason
Palmer did most of the work, ripping off runs of 12, 18 and 19
yards behind gaping holes up the middle before he scored on an
11-yard swing pass from Brandon
Noohi.
NSU failed on fourth down tries its last two possessions of the
game and the Bronchos were able to celebrate.
Palmer finished with 97 yards rushing on 20 carries in addition to
the TD reception. Noohi was just 13-of-30 passing for 107 yards and
he was intercepted twice after being picked off just once all
season.
Linebacker Terrence
Hill led the defense with 11 tackles and a forced fumble, while
linebacker K.C.
Asiodu had eight tackles, a 78-yard interception return and a
fumble recovery and end Freddie
Harris seven stops with a sack, a fumble recovery and a broken
up pass.
UCO took a 3-0 lead five minutes into the game on Chad
Susman's 33-yard field goal after Terry
Hardeman had recovered a fumble at the NSU 36, with the
RiverHawks tying it late in the period on a short Jared Homer field
goal.
A short punt had the RiverHawks in business minutes later at the
UCO 27, but on second down from there Asiodu picked off a Kenny
Davis pass at the 22 and raced untouched 78 yards for the touchdown
- getting a final clearing block from Harris at the 15 - to put the
Bronchos on top to stay.
UCO turned another turnover into its next points, with Matt
Gates forcing a fumble that Ellis
White recovered at the NSU 33.
It took two plays for the Bronchos to score, with Noohi hitting Daniel
Morrell for 32 yards to the one before Da'Marean Pullen bulled
over for the touchdown and a 17-3 lead with 10:00 left in the
half.
White had another fumble recovery minutes later at the NSU 20, but
UCO couldn't capitalize when Noohi was intercepted in the end zone
on a second-and-goal play from the two.
The RiverHawks made it 17-10 with just 35 seconds left in the half
when Noohi was hit while trying the pass on a scramble and McCoy
Campbell intercepted it and ran it back 45 yards for the touchdown.
