Football: Unbeaten ACU, WTAMU to play in Top Five showdown
No. 3 Abilene Christian and No. 4 West Texas A&M each put up 51 points to roll to victory last week and remain unbeaten setting up a Top Five showdown this week in Canyon, Texas. The Wildcats and Buffaloes go head-to-head at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium on Saturday at 6 p.m. with the winner gaining the upper hand in the South Division and conference races.
The last time that two Lone Star Conference teams were both ranked in the top five was Oct. 28, 2003, when Texas A&M-Kingsville was ranked No. 4 and Central Oklahoma was ranked No. 5 but they did not play each other at that point. However, Saturday's game will be the third time that two LSC members, both ranked in the top-five, have played each other. In 1987, No. 2 TAMUK defeated No. 5 Eastern New Mexico, 30-7, and in 1989, No. 1 TAMUK defeated No. 5 Angelo State, 42-3.
This also marks just the third time since 1967 that two undefeated teams with records of 6-0 or better have met in league history. The most recent was in 2006 as ACU and WTAMU battled and prior to that it was in 1967 as TAMUK and Texas State met in the last game of the year with 8-0 and 9-0 records, respectively.
In the North, Central Oklahoma improved to 2-0 with a win over Southeastern Oklahoma, while Southwestern Oklahoma edged Northeastern State and East Central claimed a non-conference overtime victory over Southern Nazarene.
Tarleton State topped Midwestern State in South Division play, while Texas A&M-Kingsville blanked Texas A&M-Commerce in crossover action.
This week's schedule includes five divisional games, one crossover contest and one non-conference match-up.
