Basketball: Four earn weekly honors
Four student-athletes were named Lone Star Conference Basketball Players of the Week for their efforts last week, league officials announced today.
LSC BASKETBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
LSC North Women's
Cassidy Pillow, University of Central Oklahoma
Sr., Forward, Elgin, Okla./Elgin
Senior veteran led UCO to a pair of home wins as the Bronchos
opened LSC North Division play, averaging 18.0 points a game while
shooting 57.9 percent from the field and 91.7 percent from the
line. She had 18 points in UCO's 74-68 win over defending
North Division and overall league champion Texas A&M-Commerce,
then followed that with another 18-point outing in just 19 minutes
during an 83-55 rout of Cameron.
LSC South Women's
Courtney Lee, West Texas A&M University
Jr., G, Arlington, Texas/Kennedale HS
Lee has played solidly for the Lady Buffs, scoring 14 points in
WT's 74-53 win over Angelo State and 16 points in WT's 85-60 rout
of Eastern New Mexico this week. She also has been effective under
the basket, grabbing five offensive and five defensive rebounds, in
addition to her five steals, four assists and one block. Against
ASU, she dished out assists on sophomore Holly Isaacs' back-to-back
three pointers - the second of which resulted from a steal by Lee -
that put the nail in the coffin for the Rambelles. Her quick hands
and aggressive play have helped her collect the second most steals
(20) and second most blocks (7) for the Lady Buffs this season.
Also, she is the second highest scorer with 181 points for a 12.1
points per game average and has the fourth highest assist tally
with 31.
LSC North Men's
Sam Belt, University of Central Oklahoma
Sr., Guard/Forward, Broken Arrow, Okla./Broken Arrow
Senior star led UCO to a pair of LSC North Division wins while
setting a school career record for 3-pointers. Belt averaged
21.5 points, 10.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists a game as the Bronchos
edged Texas A&M-Commerce and routed Cameron. He had 15
points and 10 boards in an 84-83 win over the Lions, then scored a
seaon-high 28 points while adding 10 rebounds in a 112-90 victory
over the Aggies. Belt made four 3-pointers in the Cameron
game, giving him 216 for his career to break the school mark of
212.
LSC South Men's
Reggie Love, Texas A&M University-Kingsville
Sr., Guard, Wichita, Kan./North
Love helped the Javelinas start 2-0 for the first time in
four seasons with a sweep of Eastern New Mexico and Midwestern
State. Love had 17 points, all in the second half as the
Javelinas rallied from down seven at halftime to win at Midwestern
State. He hit 5-of-7 shots overall, 3-of-5 3-point shots and
all four free throws in the second half. He had 14 points and
hit 4 of 6 3-point shot attempts in the win over Eastern New
Mexico. Again he was spectacular in the second half, scoring
eight of his 14 points in the second half and hitting 2 of 3
3-point shots attempts.
