LSC Baseball Championship: Four teams remain
Four teams remain heading into the third day of action at the Lone Star Conference Baseball Championship at Crutcher Scott Field in Abilene, Texas.
Cameron 10, Eastern New Mexico 6
Cameron broke a 6-6 tie with three runs in the top of the seventh as the sixth-ranked Aggies went on to a 10-6 win over Eastern New Mexico in an elimination game at the Lone Star Conference Baseball Championship at Crutcher Scott Field.
The top-seeded Aggies are now 42-14 and advance to Monday's
play, while the Greyhounds see their season end at 28-28.
With the game tied, Blake Watson led off the top of the seventh
with a walk and then went to second on a single by Clint Powell.
Keith Powell then singled to load the bases for the Aggies.
Kyle Nyhart and Josh Barnett followed with a pair of sacrifice
flies to make it 8-6 before Chase Elder doubled in Keith Powell to
make it 9-6. That was all the Aggies needed to keep their
tournament run alive and put an end to the Greyhounds' season.
ENMU left runners at second and third in the bottom of the seventh
and the ninth as it went 0-2 in it's first-ever tournament
appearance.
Logan Grimes (9-1) went six innings to pick up the win for the
Aggies, while James Maxwell worked the final three innings to pick
up his ninth save. Matthew Aragon was tagged with the loss for the
Greyhounds, falling to 2-4.
Tarleton State 7, Southeastern Oklahoma 3
The Tarleton baseball team won its second game of the 2009 Lone Star Conference Baseball Championships with a 7-3 win over Southeastern Oklahoma at Crutcher Scott Field on Sunday.
The No. 6 seeded Texans (27-28-1) came back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the No. 4 seeded Savage Strom (27-27) and eliminate SE from the tournament in the process.
Austin Neal (2-5) picked up just his second win on the season in what was the biggest stage he has pitched in his young career.
Neal gave up a two-run home run to Torey Oller in the bottom of the second inning but settled down enough to retire the next ten batters.
Chris Casazza led off the top of the fourth inning with a surprise bunt-single and later came around to score Tarleton's first run on a Cy Williams single to left field.
With runners at second and third in the Tarleton fifth, Keith Peacock singled to center field and Chad Cloud scored on the play to make it a 3-2 game. A few batters later, Thomas de Angelis hit a sharp ground ball past the SE third baseman and John Ropple scored to tie the game 3-3.
SE's Robbie Morris put an end to the 10 in-a-row that Neal retired with a home run shot to right field in the bottom of the fifth inning to put the Savage Storm back on top 4-3.
Tarleton answered in the top of the sixth with a three-run inning to retake the lead, 6-3. Back-to-back singles from Bucky Squyres and Aaron Dalton put runners at first and second with no outs and Andrew Wolfe followed with a slash-single through the left side to score Squyres on the play. Cloud came up to bat and after what was supposed to be a pitching change for the Savage Storm, but the umpires called SE's starting pitcher, Nathan Johnson, back to the mound. Matt Hinds came in to relieve Johnson with a 1-2 count already to Cloud, but after a meeting between the umpires, Johnson was summoned back to the mound. Apparently, SE head coach Matt Metheney had already made too many trips to the mound and Johnson had to finish the at bat. Cloud wasted no time in ending the at-bat as he stroked the next pitch he saw over the shortstop's head and Dalton scored on the play. Hinds reentered the game and managed to get the first two outs of the inning, but Wolfe came around to score on Peacock's ground out to the shortstop to make it a 6-3 game in favor of the Texans.
Neal gave up a leadoff single to Josh Rorex in the bottom of the seventh inning and Scott Crook came into the game to relieve the freshman. Crook managed to induce a double-play ball but walked the next three batters he faced to load the bases. Crook then ended the threat as he got Scott Hancock to line out to Dalton and end the inning without any damage done.
P.J. Burns retired the side in the bottom of the eighth inning, striking out all three batters he faced and the Texans added a run in the top of the ninth on Squyres' RBI-triple to center field to make it a 7-3 game.
Burns allowed two SE runners to reach base in the bottom of the ninth but ended up getting out of the inning and earning his first save in his first relief outing of the season.
Tarleton continued to stay aggressive on the base paths, collecting nine stolen bases on the day - one shy of tying the school record (10, 1988). Cloud, Ropple and Williams each had two stolen bases apiece.
Cloud and Squyres led the Texans at the plate as both hitters collected three hits each. Peacock had two hits and two runs batted in on the day as well.
Johnson (4-7) was hit with the loss allowing six runs (four earned) on 11 hits through five full innings of work.
Neal finished the game allowing the three runs on six hits while striking out seven.
For the first time since 2002, Tarleton has won two postseason games. The Texans remain in the winner's bracket and will face the winner of tonight's Abilene Christian-Angelo State game on Monday at 11 a.m.
ACU 7, ASU 1
All season long the ACU Wildcats have looked to their defense to bail them out of tight situations, and Sunday night against Angelo State was no different.
And once again, that defense responded when the Wildcats needed
it the most.
The Wildcats turned in three inning-ending double plays and at
least two other spectacular defensive plays as they turned back
Angelo State, 7-1, in a winner's bracket game of the Lone Star
Conference Baseball Championship at Crutcher Scott Field.
The 25th-ranked Wildcats are now 41-17 and will take on Tarleton
State at 11 a.m. Monday in another winner's bracket game.
Angelo State (41-17) will take on top-seeded Cameron in an
elimination game at 3 p.m.
The winner of the ACU-TSU game will move into Tuesday's
championship round and will have to beaten twice for someone else
to win the conference championship. The Wildcats and
Texans split a four-game series April 24-25 in Stephenville.
ACU's defense came up huge early in the game, getting starting
pitcher Cooper Page out of a couple of hot spots.
In the second, with ACU already on top 3-0, the Rams loaded the
bases with the help of two hit batters by Page. But he
bounced back to get Brian Rasberry to ground into an inning-ending
4-6-3 double play.
In the fourth, with the Wildcats still holding that 3-0 lead,
Chris Adamson lined a ball down the third-base line that looked to
be headed for the corner and a leadoff double. But Steve
Camillucci dove to his right, knocked the ball down and then fired
a strike to Brett Bochsler at first to get Adamson by a step.
After Jason Morris reached on a throwing error by Willie Uechi,
Travis Lites bounced into an inning-ending double play started by
Uechi that kept the ACU lead at 3-0.
The Wildcats -- who got two runs in the second on a two-run blast
by Cameron Watten -- put two more on the board in the sixth on
back-to-back RBI singles by Watten and Bochsler to increase the
lead to 5-0.
Angelo got a run back in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single
by Adamson, but the damage could have been much worse. With
one out and the bases loaded, Page got pinch-hitter Clay Puckett to
hit a ground ball to Camillucci at third. He stepped on the
bag for the second out and then made a strong throw across the
diamond to complete the double play and get the Wildcats out of
another tight spot.
That was all for Page, who scattered four hits over six innings,
walked two and struck out two. He picked up the victory to
improve to 3-1 on the season. Kevin Justice and Brad
Rutherford combined to allow four hits over the final three
innings, but the Rams couldn't cross the plate against the ACU
bullpen.
ACU put the game away in the seventh when Thomas Bumpass drove in
Jordan Schmitt and Travis Latz with a two-out, two-run single to
centerfield, pushing the lead to 7-1.

10 hits and three runs and has a combined 1.50 ERA. Opponents

and 14 runs scored.
