Baseball: Two pick up weekly awards
Four players earned Lone Star Conference Diamond Baseball Player of the Week honors for their efforts last week, the league office announced today.
Diamond Players of the Week
LSC Hitter
Ryan Schoonover, Central Oklahoma, So., Outfield, Stillwater,
Okla./Stillwater
Schoonover helped lead UCO to a 3-2 week, hitting an
sizzling .615 with eight hits in 13 at bats. He scored seven
runs and drove in nine with two doubles and a home run while also
stealing three bases and playing perfect in left field.
Schoonover had a grand slam in UCO's 8-4 first-game win over
Eastern New Mexico and he drove in three runs in the Bronchos' 11-8
victory over the Greyhounds.
Co-LSC Pitcher
Brad Bichel, Cameron, Sr., Pitcher, St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles
CC
Bichel had a very strong outing this weekend for #11
Cameron, improving his season record to 10-1 overall after winning
a game one pitcher's duel last weekend against nationally-ranked
Abilene Christian, who at the time was #9 in the nation. Bichel
went 6.0 strong innings, giving up only one unearned run. He faced
27 batters and gave up 4 walks, but threw 3 strikeouts. Bichel was
able to get out of a few tough jams in the game. In the second
inning with the bases loaded and no outs, Bichel threw a strikeout
and then got the very next batter to hit into a double-play,
preventing any runs from coming across. In another inning, Bichel
caught a hard-hit ground ball with his bare hand, and threw out the
runner at first base, stopping runs from crossing home plate. For
the season Bichel is third on the team with a 4.18 earned run
average, second on the team with 55 strikeouts, and first on the
squad with 75.1 innings pitched. Opposing hitters are batting just
.279 when Bichel is on the hill, and his recent pitching is a huge
reason the Aggies moved up from #21 to #11 in the most recent
national rankings and currently lead the entire LSC.
Matt Hinds, Southeastern Oklahoma, Sr., Pitcher, Plano,
Texas/Plano HS
Hinds posted three relief appearances that all directly contributed
to Southeastern's four-game sweep of Texas A&M-Kingsville which
keeps the Storm's postseason playoff chances alive. Hinds
picked up a win and a pair of saves in 6.1 innings pitched over
three contests. He scattered just five hits, holding the
Javelinas to a .208 batting average when he was on the hill.
He did not allow a run and only four baserunners passed first
base.
Danny Morris, Tarleton State, Sr., RHP, Princeton,
Texas/Princeton
The Tarleton offense scored just one run in game one on Sunday
against Southwestern Oklahoma, but that was all it needed as Morris
pitched his second complete-game shutout of the season.
Morris went the full 7.0 innings while scattering just three hits
and striking out one. His dominance on the mound kept the
Texans on pace to clinch a berth in the LSC postseason tournament.
