Baseball: Conference play starts this week
The 2009 baseball season has begun with all 12 Lone Star
Conference teams taking the field. For the second year, the
LSC will play an 11-week, single round-robin schedule with a
four-game series against every other team. The league
schedule begins this week.
Diamond Players of the Week
LSC Hitter
Nate Arevalo, Cameron, Sr., Third Base, Tuscon, Ariz./South
Mountain Community College
Arevalo had a great week offensively for the Aggies as he
was instrumental in helping CU to start the season 5-1. Arevalo
leads the team with a .556 batting average and 3 doubles. His key,
run-scoring hits assisted a great deal in CU's 3-1 series victory
over Pittsburg State and their season-opening split with Bacone
College. After going hitless in the season opener, Arevalo has hit
safely in five straight games and has failed to record a hit in
only one at-bat in each game since.
LSC Pitcher
Cameron Aspaas, Abilene Christian, Jr., RHP, San Marcos,
Calif./San Marcos HS
Aspaas appeared in two games in the season's first week,
the first in a relief appearance vs. Incarnate Word in the
season-opener on Tuesday and the other in a start Saturday against
New Mexico Highlands. ... In the start against Highlands, Aspaas
went 6 2/3 innings (7-inning game), allowing six hits and two runs
(0 earned) while walking just one batter and striking out 8 as he
picked up the victory. ... In Tuesday's 11-inning season-opening
win at UIW, Aspaas threw three innings of scoreless relief, giving
up just one hit and one walk while striking out a pair of
Cardinals.
