Barnett, Calfee and Key earn weekly honors
Cameron's Josh Barnett and Angelo State's Clay Calfee and Joe Key were named Lone Star Conference Baseball Players of the Week for their performances last week, the league office announced today.
LSC BASEBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Co-LSC Hitter of the Week
Josh Barnett, Cameron University
Jr., Centerfield, Lubbock, Texas/University of Texas-San
Antonio
Barnett had a great week offensively this week against some very
impressive pitching. He had his way with both the Northeastern
State and Central Oklahoma pitching staffs last week and is showing
great intelligence at the plate. Barnett has done an incredible job
as Cameron's lead-off hitter this season and now has a .475 on-base
percentage. After last week's offensive prowess, Barnett is now
batting .413 on the season, which is good enough for second-best on
the CU squad. Look for Barnett to continue his impressive play for
the rest of the season.
Clay Calfee, Angelo State University
Jr., First base, Conroe, Texas/Conroe
Junior All-American Clay Calfee continued his onslaught on the ASU
record book as he took over the lead in RBI and doubles while
extending his school-record hitting to 27 straight games. In
the first game of the week versus No. 24-ranked St. Mary's, Calfee
banged out a two-run blast in the first inning in a game ASU came
back to win, 12-7. Calfee started off his series against
Eastern New Mexico falling a double short of hitting for the cycle
in game one of the four game set, driving in five runs in ASU's
12-1 win. Game one on Saturday's double header saw the Conroe
native launch his seventh home run of the season for his only hit
of the game as the Rams won, 7-4. The nightcap saw Calfee go
3-for-4 with one RBI as ASU beat ENMU, 10-1. The series finale had
Calfee going 1-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI. For
the week, Calfee hit .474 with two doubles, two triples, three home
runs, six runs scored and 12 RBI and a slugging percentage of
1.263.
LSC Pitcher of the Week
Joe Key, Angelo State University
Sr., Pitcher, Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock
Key appeared in three games last week and recorded two saves in
helping the Rams to a 5-0 week. In his first appearance of
the week against No. 24-ranked St. Mary's, he tossed the final two
innings, limiting the Rattlers to one hit while striking out three
to preserve a 12-7 win. His second appearance game in game
one of the double header against ENMU where he pitched two innings
and allowing just one hit in garnering his fourth save of the
season in a 7-4 win. His final appearance was in the series
finale as he came in the eighth with the tying run on and one out
and shut down the Greyhounds, limiting them to one hit over the
final 1.2 innings to earn his fifth save of the season. For
the week, Key had a 0.00 ERA in 5.2 innings pitched with two saves,
four hits, two walks, four strikeouts and an opposition batting
average of .190.
