Rams season ends at World Series
Angelo State had its stellar season come to an end Tuesday afternoon in the Montgomery, Ala., as the Rams were eliminated from the 2007 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship.
ASU (51-20) lost 12-10 to Southern Indiana in a high-scoring elimination contest on Tuesday afternoon. The Rams were 1-2 in their first-ever World Series appearance, including a 12-3 extra-inning victory over Franklin Pierce in the opening round and a 5-4 loss to Columbus State on Monday.
ASU, which moved on to the World Series after winning the South Central Region championship, fell in a three-inning slugfest turned into a six-inning pitching dual on Tuesday.
USI jumped on the board early with six runs in the bottom of the first inning started by a lead-off home run. ASU responded in the second frame with seven runs on seven hits to take the lead. A Shan Sullivan triple brought in a pair of runs, while Nate Hemm also collected two runs batted in with a double in the second.
The Rams scored the rest of their runs in the third inning highlighted by an inside-the-park home run by Clay Calfee, while the Screaming Eagles' posted six more runs in the second, third and fourth innings combined to stay in the tournament.
