Baseball: Rams defeat ACU for LSC championship
For the first time in the three-year history of the program, the Angelo State Rams won the Lone Star Conference championship as they prevailed over Abilene Christian, 3-1, in the title game of the LSC Postseason Baseball Tournament at ACU's Crutcher Scott Field.
The Rams (45-17) will make their first appearance in the NCAA regional as the LSC's automatic bid to the six-team tournament. ASU forced the if-necessary game with an 8-2 victory over ACU in game 10 of the tournament on Tuesday.
ASU struck first in the top of the third inning, scoring a run on a pair of doubles by tournament Most Valuable Player Daniel Ochs and Steven Allred. The Rams added another run in the fifth and sixth innings as well.
On the mound, Ram starter Cody Broussard held the Wildcats hitless for 5.1 innings and was relieved in the seventh frame after allowing one earned run with five strikeouts to improve to 11-1 this season. Joe Key entered to face the final five ACU batters and gave up just one hit to earn his third save of the season.
