Sportswriter Troy Phillips and San Angelo broadcaster Randy Ward were both honored for the first time as the annual Lone Star Conference media awards were announced Monday by league officials.

      Phillips won the Kirk Hill Award as the league's top sportswriter, while Ward was recognized with the Jake Trussell Award as the outstanding broadcaster of the year.

      The awards, which distinguish those who best promote the LSC and its members through their work in the media, are selected annually by sports information directors at the LSC's 15 member institutions.

      Phillips, a former sportswriter with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, promoted the LSC since 2007.  His weekly notes and features highlighted the league and student-athletes from the Dallas - Fort Worth area. Phillips was in charge of small colleges in addition to covering local colleges, high schools and professional golf. After spending 17 years at the Star-Telegram, he recently stepped away. 

      Ward has been the Sports Director at KSAN-TV for three years.  He covers all the Ram and Rambelle home events and also travels with the ASU teams to keep the San Angelo community informed.  An Oklahoma native, Ward graduated from Central Oklahoma in 2006.
