Softball: ASU's Zeigler, CU's Hines earn weekly awards

Texas A&M-Commerce tops the standings at 21-6 in Lone Star Conference play, with Texas A&M-Kingsville (18-6) and West Texas A&M (18-6) just behind them.

        LSC teams are playing a single round-robin schedule with a three-game series against each league opponent.  The overall LSC Champion will be the team(s) with the best winning percentage in regular-season conference games, while the winner of the postseason championship will be recognized as LSC Tournament Champion and receive the league’s automatic qualification into NCAA postseason.  The single-elimination championship featuring the top six teams will be played May 3-4, at the No. 1 seed.

        LSC softball teams are 238-193 overall this season.  In the NCAA South Central Region, the group is currently 28-24 combined versus Heartland Conference teams and 24-8 against the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

HITTER

Avery Zeigler, Angelo State University, FR, Undeclared, Infield/Outfield, Southlake, Texas, Southlake Carroll HS

Zeigler played well beyond her years as the freshman was always on base when her team needed her as the Rambelles took two out of three games against Texas A&M-Kingsville. Zeigler tripled in the first game of the series to put herself in position to be the tying run in the Rambelles walk off 7-6 win. The Southlake, Texas, native drove in three runs over the series, scored four times herself, and hit her fifth home run of the season.

 

PITCHER

Bethany Hines, Cameron University, JR, Early Childhood Education, Pitcher, Washington, Okla., Washington HS

Hines was dominant in the circle for the Aggies, winning two of their three games against Texas Woman's this weekend. In the opener, the junior went all five innings, giving up just one earned run on three hits and two walks. Hines also struck out six batters in the 10-2 win. She then pitched the opening 5.1 innings of the series finale, giving up just one earned run on five hits. She struck out three Pioneers on her way to her 12th win of the season and 51st of her career.
