LSC Golf Championships: TSU, MSU take home titles

Tarleton State won its 11th Lone Star Conference women’s golf championship, while Midwestern State won its second men’s title.  The annual league event was held at Diamondback Golf Course in Abilene, Texas.

On the women's side, the TexAnns went around the course at 3-over-par (285-286=571) to break the LSC record for lowest team score in a 36-hole tournament. The old conference record – set by the TexAnns in 2009 – was 585.

Tarleton was led by Casey Leatherman, who had a career day in the final round, setting a new school record for lowest round and lowest individual 36-hole score at the LSC Championships. After carding a 75 (+4) in the first round, Leatherman followed with a 5-under-par 66 to finish with a 141 (-1) and place second overall.

Casey Wild, Junie Khaw and Sarah Gee also finished in the top five for Tarleton.

West Texas A&M finished second (581), while MSU (592) was third.

WT’s Jelina Fernando was the individual medalist at four-under-par 138 (69-69).

Fernando was joined by Tarleton’s Leatherman, Wild, Khaw and Gee on the all-tournament team.

Tarleton earned the LSC’s automatic bid to the West Regional Tournament, which will be held on May 7-9 at the Hillcrest Golf Club in Durango, Colorado.
