LSC announces annual women’s basketball awards

Angelo State’s Marquita Daniels was tabbed Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year to headline the Lone Star Conference women’s basketball postseason awards were announced Wednesday by league officials.
      The awards announcement came at the annual championship banquet at Main Event in Frisco, Texas, where the LSC Basketball Championship tournament is set to begin on Thursday at Dr Pepper Arena.  The women’s first-round games will be played Thursday, March 1, with the semifinals set for Saturday, March 3. Both the women’s and men’s championship games are on Sunday, March 4.
      Daniels was joined on the All-LSC first team by Cameron’s Jamie Bonnarens, Tarleton State’s Mackenzie Hailey, Texas A&M-Commerce’s Brianna Wise, and West Texas A&M’s Lexy Hightower.
      ASU’s De'Anira Moore claimed Defensive Player of the Year acclaim.  Joining Moore on the all-defensive team was Daniels, CU’s Lejha Smith, TSU’s Hailey, and WT’s Tiana Parker.
      Eastern New Mexico’s Kaylee Edgemon was tabbed Freshman of the Year, while the Lady Buffs Kristen Mattio recieved Coach of the Year honors.
      Overall, 25 student-athletes were recognized by the all-conference program plus five on the all-defensive team.  The awards are voted upon by the league coaches.
