West Texas A&M’s David Chavlovich was named Player of the Year to take top billing as the Lone Star Conference men’s basketball postseason awards announced Tuesday by league officials.
The awards announcement came Tuesday night at a pre-championship banquet in Allen, Texas, where the LSC Basketball Championship tournament is set to begin on Wednesday. First-round games will be played Wednesday, March 2, and Thursday, March 3, with the semifinals set for Friday, March 4. Both the women’s and men’s championship games are on Saturday, March 5.
Chavlovich leads the LSC in scoring (20.5) and three-pointers made per game (3.6). He has scored in double figures in 29 of 30 games played with a season-high 31 points on two occasions (Dec. 1 and Jan. 20).
Joining Chavlovich on the first team were Midwestern State’s Khapri Alston, Angelo State’s Tre Bennett, Cameron’s Jamaal Brantley and Tarleton State’s EJ Reed.
Defensive Player of the Year recognition went to MSU’s Trevor Fuller. He led the league in blocked shots (3.3) and ranked 25th in rebounding (4.5).
On the all-defensive team with Fuller was Texas A&M-Commerce’s Bryant Crowder and Anthony Adams, ASU’s Prince Foster, and CU’s Deondre Ray.
Additional special awards announced Tuesday included newcomer, freshman and coach of the year.
The Rams Bennett was tabbed Newcomer of the Year, while the Aggies JV Long earned Freshman of the Year acclaim. CU’s Nate Gamet and MSU’s Nelson Haggerty shared Coach of the Year honors.
Overall, 17 student-athletes were recognized by the all-conference program plus five on the all-defensive team. The awards are voted upon by the league coaches.
