Midwestern State’s Kayla Casey was tabbed Women’s Tennis Academic Player of the Year to headline the Lone Star Conference tennis academic awards announced Thursday by league officials.
Casey earned recognition for her success on the court and in the classroom. The elementary education major from Franklin, Texas, is 8-7 this season playing out of the No. 1 position for the LSC Champion Mustangs. The junior is 11-6 in the top doubles pairing with Taylor Coffman.
Joining Casey on the team was MSU teammate Madeline Schorlemmer, Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Marija Dimitrovska and Mariaxi Herrera, and Cameron’s Samantha Wood and Paula Gutierrez.
Casey and Herrera were both honored for the second straight year.
To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.30 grade point average and have reached sophomore status both athletically and academically. The Academic Player of Year award and All-Academic Team are selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league's sports information directors voting on the basis of both academic and athletic achievement.
