LSC Football Recap - Week 1

Lions Open Season in Record-Breaking Fashion Thursday

The A&M-Commerce football team opened the 2014 season in record breaking fashion beating East Texas Baptist in a 98-20 rout setting a new NCAA Division II record for total offense with 986 yards Thursday night at Memorial Stadium.

To go along with the NCAA record for total offense, the Lions set LSC record for points scored with 98, tied the touchdown record with 13, and matched the record for the most point after attempts with 12.  The A&M-Commerce record book was rewritten for most points in a half with 57 in the first half.

Tyrik Rollison, who completed 26-of-33 of his passes for 562 and six touchdowns, paved the way for the Lions with his arm.  On the ground, the Lions produced 405 yards as three players turned in 100 yard performances – Joe Bergeron with 137 yards and two TDs, Richard Cooper with 118 yards and two TDs, and Theo Wofford with 103 yards and two TDs on only nine carries...Complete Release

No. 11 Buffs fall 35-6 at No. 4 Colorado State-Pueblo in Season-Opener

The No. 11 West Texas A&M football team dropped its 2014 season-opener 35-6 at No. 4 Colorado State-Pueblo Thursday evening.  WT was led defensively by 16 total tackles from redshirt freshman Carter James.

The Buffs struggled offensively as they totaled 302 yards of offense, including 94 rushing yards and 208 passing yards.  WT junior quarterback Preston Rabb went 25 of 49 passing in his debut behind center.  Northwestern senior transfer Venric Mark tallied 58 yards on the ground, while senior Anthony Johnson had nine catches for 61 yards and junior Jarrian Rhone had five catches for 72 yards.  Three lost fumbles also proved costly.

CSUP, who returned a senior-laden team from last year, tallied 163 yards on the ground to go along with 277 yards passing for 440 total yards.  Senior quarterback Chris Bonner went 16 of 31 for 277 yards with four touchdowns and one interception, while Cameron McDondle ran the ball for 83 yards and J.B. Matthews had 53 yards on the ground with a score.  Senior Paul Browning had four catches for 102 yards and a touchdown...Complete Release

Johnson Leads Gridiron Greyhounds Over Highlands

Redshirt senior wide receiver Jacob Johnson caught four passes for a career-best 178 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Eastern New Mexico University football team (1-0) to a 44-21 win over New Mexico Highlands, in the season opener for both teams at Perkins Stadium. The win extended Eastern's win streak to seven games, from last season, which is the longest running win streak in the Lone Star Conference.

The win moved the Hounds to 31-13 all-time in the series against the Cowboys and snapped a three-game skid in the series. ENMU's last road victory in the series came on September 14, 2002, by a 70-28 score. Eastern also snapped a three-game skid in season-opening games and moved to 38-37 in those contests.

Johnson hauled in a 22-yard strike from Jeremy Buurma with 6:57 left in the opening quarter to give ENMU a 7-0 lead it would not relinquish. He added a 33-yard touchdown catch, early in the second quarter for a 14-0 lead. The Cowboys would not pull closer than 14 points the rest of the way...Complete Release

McM Upends Houston Baptist Huskies, 26-17

McMurry University's football team used a tremendous defensive effort and an opportunistic offense to defeat NCAA Division I Houston Baptist University, 26-17, spoiling the unveiling of HBU's Husky Stadium, as well. The victory was also the first at McM for War Hawks' head coach Lance Hinson at the school.

It marked the second time in four seasons that McM has handed a fledgling NCAA I foe its first official loss. In 2011, McM defeated UT-San Antonio for the first time during its inaugural campaign. The last coach to score a victory in his debut with McMurry was the late Joe Crousen in 2005

For Hinson, winning in his first game at the War Hawks' helm was something not accomplished by such notable former McM head coaches as Grant Teaff, Spud Aldridge, Hal Mumme or Steve Keenum. The last coach to score a victory in his debut with McMurry was the late Joe Crousen in 2005...Complete Release

Lumberjacks Ground and Pound Way to Victory Over @JavelinaFB in Season Opener

It seemed to be déjà vu as senior Anthony Washington returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown to begin the second half but Humboldt State University (1-0) rushed for 241 yards en route to a 27-14 defeat over Texas A&M University-Kingsville (0-1) on Saturday evening at Javelina Stadium.

The 96-yard return is a new school record as last season's 100-yard kickoff return against Monterrey Tech did not count towards NCAA Division II statistics.

The return of 2012 all-American Nick Ricciardulli and the collegiate debut of Ja'Quan Gardner jumpstarted the ground and pound attack that the Jacks used to go 7-4 two seasons ago. Ricciardulli finished with 75 yards and Gardner led all players with 157 yards and a touchdown...Complete Release
