LSC announces Track & Field awards

Angelo State and Texas A&M-Kingsville topped the All-Lone Star Conference awards with 11 honorees each out of the 50 athletes recognized for their efforts at the 2014 LSC Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships.  The awards were announced Thursday by league officials.

TAMUK claimed the men’s title for the third time and first since 1970 with nine all-LSC performers, while ASU won the women’s crown for the sixth consecutive year and eighth time overall behind the efforts of six all-conference athletes.

The list of all-conference performers includes the winner of each event at the conference meet, including all members of the winning relay teams, plus any athlete who scores at least 14 points at the meet. In all, 25 men and 25 women were recognized by the all-conference program

In addition to the announcement of All-LSC performers, the league recognized four student-athletes and two coaches with individual awards.

On the men’s side, the Javelinas Tim Price earned the Cap Shelton Award as Outstanding Male Track Athlete, while West Texas A&M’s Zach Weatherly picked up the Oscar Strahan Award as Outstanding Male Field Athlete.  TAMUK’s Ryan Dall was named Men’s Track Coach of the Year.

WT’s Libby Strickland took home both the Wes Kittley Award as Outstanding Female Track Athlete and the David Noble Award as Outstanding Female Field Athlete.  Strickland is the second female to earn both awards, joining Incarnate Word’s Elodie Barre’ in 2011.  ASU’s Reid was tabbed Women’s Track Coach of the Year for the eighth straight year.

The special awards were voted upon by the league coaches.

Several of the LSC track and field athletes are now preparing for the conclusion of the 2014 outdoor season with the NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Championships, set for May 22-24 in Allendale, Mich.
