Top-Seeded Lady Buffs Survive Scare From Cameron

The No. 1 seed on the women’s side of the bracket got all they wanted and more from eighth-seeded Cameron, but West Texas A&M proved to be too strong in the end.

The Lady Buffs were able to make clutch baskets on one end, and key turnovers on the other to pull away from the Aggies for a hard-fought, 64-53 quarterfinal win in the LSC Championships at the Allen Event Center.

WT (24-2) advances to the semifinal round to face Thursday’s winner between Midwestern State and Angelo State.

The season ends for Cameron with a 13-13 record.

But this was far from a typical 1 vs. 8 matchup as the Aggies kept hanging around, and mainly because of timely 3-point shots. Ali Brown made five of them on her way to a team-high 18 points. Brown also added seven rebounds.

West Texas A&M was paced by first-team selection Devin Griffin, who had 21 points and nine rebounds. Casey Land had 16 points, nailed four 3-pointers and had five steals. Chontiquah White hauled in 10 boards to go alone with seven points.

With just over five minutes to play, the Aggies trailed 53-51 but turned the ball over four straight times with a chance to tie the game or take the lead. The Lady Buffs continued to add to the lead with clutch baskets from both Griffin and Land.

Griffin’s jumper with 59 seconds to play gave WT a six-point lead and that proved to be the dagger.

Earlier in the half, Cameron led by two before West Texas’ Jordan Vessels hit two straight 3-pointers to give her team the lead. The Lady Buffs would never trail again.

Along with Brown’s big shots for the Aggies, they got 13 points and six rebounds from Jasmine Robinson.
