LSC Outdoor Track & Field: Teams set for championship run

LSC TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Lone Star Conference Track and Field Championships are set for a three-day run May 2-4 at West Texas A&M’s Buffalo Sports Park.  The meet is part of the LSC Spring Championships Festival.
    Abilene Christian is the reigning men’s champion with 19 straight titles, while Angelo State has won the last four championships on the women’s side.
    The events start Thursday at 1 p.m. with the multi-events portion and conclude Saturday night with finals and team trophy presentations.
    An all-festival pass, which includes admission to the baseball and softball championships, will be $25 for adults and $10 for youth.  Single day passes are $15 for adults and $6 for youth.  All seats are considered general admission and are on a first-come, first-serve basis.

    For fans that can’t make it out to the championships, the action will be broadcast online via a free live webcast on Friday starting at 6 p.m. and Saturday beginning at 5 p.m. The webcast will include both video and audio with viewers needing only a computer with a high-speed DSL or cable modem connection to the internet.  The webcasts will be carried at www.lonestarconference.org.

LSC TRACK AND FIELD
The Lone Star Conference has four men’s and four women’s teams in the top 25 in the national team computer rankings (April  30) conducted by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).  The men are represented by No. 14 Angelo State, No. 16 Abilene Christian, No. 22 Texas A&M-Kingsville, and No. 23 West Texas A&M. On the women’s side, ASU is No. 7, followed by No. 13 Harding, No. 15 ACU and No. 24 WT.
    So far this season, LSC athletes have posted 11 NCAA Division II automatic qualifying marks with seven on the men’s side and four by the women.  Additionally, 152 provisional marks have been set with 70 by men and 82 by women.  The national championship is May 23-25 in Pueblo, Colo.

   

TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
MEN’S TRACK
Isidro Garcia, Angelo State University, SR, Crane, Texas, Crane
Garcia punched his ticket to the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 800-meter at the Texas Tech Open. The senior ran a personal-best and NCAA Division II automatic-qualifying time of 1:49.57 to place second overall. It is the third-fastest time nationally in Division II and the fastest in the LSC this season.  

MEN’S FIELD
Austin Slone, Angelo State University, SR, Friendswood, Texas, Friendswood
Slone was the top collegian at the Texas Tech Open this past weekend in the triple jump. The senior recorded a season-best mark of 50’-7.50” (15.43m). He is now No. 4 in NCAA Division II and No. 1 in the LSC.  

WOMEN’S TRACK
Alesha Jones, Eastern New Mexico University, JR, Wilcox, Ariz., Eastern Arizona CC
Jones finished third in her heat and overall in the 800 meters at the Texas Tech Red Raider Open on Thursday with a time of 2:12.83. It was third fastest time of her career and this year. She was also a member of the 4x400 meter team that set a school record in a time of 3:58.52. The team placed fourth in the event in Lubbock.

WOMEN’S FIELD
Kris-Ann Walter, Eastern New Mexico University, SO, Jamaica, Adams State
Walter set a school record in the long jump with a distance 19’-6” (5.94m) at the Texas Tech Red Raider Open on Thursday to place third in the event. She surpassed the previous record by nearly a foot. The jump was the third longest this season in the Lone Star Conference.
