The Angelo State softball team earned a 5-3 win over St. Edward's on Sunday at the ASU Softball Complex in the NCAA Division II Softball South Central Regional. With the victory, the No. 8 Rambelles advance to the South Central Super Regionals and will play either Emporia State or Central Oklahoma May 11-12.
ASU went 3-0 this weekend and improved to 47-9 on the season. The Belles outscored their opponents 12-5 thanks to steady hitting and consistent pitching. ASU had four players hit above .300 led by April Bresehars' .444 average. Claire Molina paced the Rambelle pitching staff as the senior went 2-0 with a 0.44 earned run average in 16.0 innings pitched.
The loss brings the Hilltoppers season to a close. The Heartland Conference tournament champs finished the year at 31-21.
SEU struck first, scoring a run in the opening frame. Miranda Yeager hit a leadoff a single and eventually scored on a Marissa Thome RBI-single down the right-field line. St. Edward's starting pitcher Sara DeBrow then sat down the Belles in order in the bottom half to lead 1-0 after one.
Although in control in the first inning, the Rambelles took it from there. Angelo State scored four runs on three hits and one error in the second inning to build a 4-1 lead. DeeshanaLynn Tafiti earned a walk then Elsamartina Apo hit a home run off the score board in center field to give ASU a 2-1 lead.
Breshears kept the offensive production rolling with a single then Chelsey Walters reached on an SEU error. A successful sacrifice by Amanda Wilhelm set the table for Morgan Spearman. The sophomore lifted one just over the shortstop and scored two.
The lead extended to 5-1 after Lauren Smith hit her 12th home run of the season to straightaway center. The Hilltoppers made it a 5-3 game after Brianna Bozon hit her first home run of the season inside the left-field foul pole, but that's as close as they would come.
Mary Kate McKay got the nod for Angelo State and went 6.0 innings allowing eight hits and three runs. The sophomore struck out three and improved to 21-5 after handing the ball over to Claire Molina for the final three outs. Molina picked up her first save of the season. DeBrow took the loss and fell to 13-8.
