History was made Sunday afternoon at the Allen Event Center as Tarleton State claimed its first-ever LSC Tournament title by holding off the underdog Cardinals of Incarnate Word, 48-44.
The TexAnns, who won the LSC Championship with the regular season title, added to their trophy case by claiming Sunday’s win, although they needed clutch free throws down the stretch to stave off UIW, which rallied from 17 points down in the second half to eventually tie the game. But in the end, Tarleton iced the game with a free-throw by Peyton Adamson, who entered as the nation’s leading free-throw shooter at .931 percent. Adamson, who scored nine of her 15 points from the line, was named the tournament’s MVP.
She was joined on the all-tournament team by Tarleton teammates Kiara Wright and Shanae Lowrance of Tarleton State and Jocelyn Jarmon and Ashlyn Green of UIW.
Wright made a case for the MVP as well with an exceptional game Sunday, with 15 points, 12 rebounds and four steals against the Cardinals. Lowrance made all six of her shots from the field to score 14 points, along with eight boards.
UIW was paced by Green’s 14 points. Jarmon had 11 points and five rebounds.
The loss ended an amazing run for the Cardinals, playing in their first LSC Tournament since joining the league last season. Incarnate Word, the sixth-seed, upset No. 3 Midwestern State in the quarterfinals, No. 2 West Texas A&M in the semis and nearly knocked off the top-seed TexAnns. UIW’s season comes to an end at 16-13.
With 19 minutes remaining in the game, Tarleton led 35-18 and remained in command up 38-27 with 12:40 to play. But that’s when the Cardinals made a 10-2 run to pull within 40-37 with 8:05 left. Green then drilled a 3-pointer to tie the score at 40 with 5:53 on the clock.
But a layup by Wright and free throws by Peyton Adamson kept the TexAnns in front. UIW trailed by three and got a steal with 35 seconds left and had a chance to tie the game with a 3. However, before Green could hoist a potential game-tying shot, she stepped out of bounds for a turnover. Adamson then hit one free throw for the four-point lead and eventual final score.
Tarleton shot just 4-of-20 from the field in the second half and had 24 turnovers. But the TexAnns out-rebounded the Cardinals 41-32.
The 48 points scored by Tarleton is the lowest in LSC Tournament history by a winning team in a championship game. The 92 combined points is also the lowest for the tournament final.
