Cameron’s Sabelle Diata claimed Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors to headline the Lone Star Conference women’s basketball postseason awards announced Tuesday by league officials.
The awards announcement came Tuesday night at a pre-championship banquet in Allen, Texas, where the LSC Basketball Championship tournament is set to begin on Wednesday. Quarterfinal games will be played all day Thursday, with semifinal games slated for Saturday afternoon and the championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Diata earned top honors by collecting the most votes in the balloting of league coaches.
With Diata on the All-LSC first team were Tarleton State’s Shelby Adamson, Midwestern State’s Savannah Carver, Abilene Christian’s Mackenzie Lankford, Texas Woman’s Jessica Hanna and West Texas A&M’s Kenisha Harris.
Additional hardware was handed out for newcomer, freshman and coach of the year.
Angelo State’s Haylee Oliver and MSU’s Dianna Jones shared Freshman of the Year acclaim, while a trio of players – CU’s Julie Paunovic, Tarleton’s Peyton Adamson and WT’s Devin Griffin – were tabbed Newcomers of the Year. MSU’s Noel Johnson picked up Coach of the Year recognition.
Overall, more than 20 student-athletes were honored by the all-conference program. The awards are voted upon by the league coaches.
