The Lone Star Conference Indoor Track and Field Invitational is set for this Sunday and Monday at the Texas Tech Athletic Training Center in Lubbock, Texas. The non-scoring meet will feature men's and women's squads from Abilene Christian, Incarnate Word, Texas A&M-Kingsville, and West Texas A&M, as well as the women's team from Angelo State.
The meet was scheduled as a prelude to the LSC sponsoring a conference championship in the sport beginning next winter.
“The meet this weekend reflects another significant moment in the advancement of the Lone Star Conference as it is clearly a precursor to 2013 when this becomes a championship event,” said LSC Commissioner Stan Wagnon. “We value the student-athlete experience in this conference, and our decision to begin sponsoring a championship for indoor track and field is an example of our commitment to provide student-athletes with an opportunity for high-level competition and a chance to position themselves for national success.”
Events begin Sunday at 11 a.m. with the women's pentathlon 60-meter hurdles and conclude Monday at 1:20 p.m. with the finals of the 4x400m relay, which closely follows the format of the NCAA Indoor Championship. The mile, 3K and 5K also will be contested.
Four of the teams enter the meet ranked by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) with ACU listed 15th and TAMUK 24th in the men’s poll, while ACU is 17th and ASU 18th on the women’s side.
ACU is the reigning NCAA Division II men’s indoor track and field champions. In 2011, the Wildcats won the title with four athletes accumulating 49 points.
The 2012 NCAA Division II Championship is March 9-10 at Myers Fieldhouse in Mankato, Minn.
