The sixth-seeded West Texas A&M women’s soccer team’s season came to an end Friday afternoon with a 4-1 loss in the first round of the 2012 NCAA South Central Regional to third-seeded Metro State at the Lewis-Chen Family Field on the campus of St. Edward’s University. With the loss, WT finishes the season with a 13-7-1 record, while Metro State improved to 14-5-2 and will move on to battle second-seeded St. Edward’s Sunday at 2 p.m.
The Roadrunners had the first real scoring opportunity as they had a free kick from the top of the box as the ball was fired into the defensive wall for the Lady Buffs just under 10 minutes into the contest.
Just under 15 minutes in, the Lady Buffs had a great opportunity as freshman Haley Girard had a good look for a shot from the right post as the ball went across the front of the goal and went wide for a goal kick.
Karisa Price had a great turn-around look outside the box to the left corner, but junior goalkeeper Yvette Bedoy was up to the challenge forcing the corner kick with a diving save. WT came right back with nice moves from senior Lindsay McHorse up field to senior Kelsey Wright for a shot and corner kick with 22 minutes remaining in the half.
Later in the half, WT had another good look as sophomore Jasmine Schultz and senior Leslie Briggs hooked up, but Briggs’ shot went off the post.
After a shot from the right post by Brandi Farley, which was saved by Bedoy, as Noemy Polanco fired from the left side on the rebound for the score and a 1-0 lead at the 38:15 mark into the first half.
For the half, the Roadrunners outshot WT 8-4 and 4-1 in shots on goal. Both teams had one corner kicks, while Bedoy had three saves. Abby Rolph and Price led MSU with three shots and one on frame each, while the Lady Buffs were led by Briggs who had two shots.
Off a corner kick by Rolph, she sent a ball to the left post as Price dished off to Kelci Newlin who fired off the volley from straight-on and 10-yards out for a score and a 2-0 lead at the 56:46 mark. Metro State then added its third goal at the 59:27 mark as Price flicked a pass to Rolph who fired over Bedoy from 15-yards out.
The Lady Buffs got on the scoreboard with a long shot from 25-yards out from senior Becky Peth as the ball hit the right post and in for the score at the 75:29 mark for a 3-1 deficit. It was Peth’s first goal of the season.
Metro State added a late goal for the final 4-1 margin.
Despite the loss, the Lady Buffs had a season to remember with their sixth Lone Star Conference championship and tournament championship, 13 wins in the season, head coach Chad Webb who was named Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year. Individually Briggs tallied 19 goals to lead the conference and rank in the top five in the nation, as well as being named LSC Offensive Player of the Year.
