LSC Women’s Soccer Championship: WTAMU, UIW to play for title

Top seeds West Texas A&M and Incarnate Word will play for the Lone Star Conference Women’s Soccer Championship Tournament title on Sunday after semifinal wins Friday at the Pitch in Canyon, Texas.

      UIW topped Angelo State in a shootout with a 4-3 advantage in penalty kicks after the teams played to a 1-1 draw, while WTAMU was a 3-1 winner over Midwestern State.

      The Cardinals are in the final for the first time in their second championship appearance against the Lady Buffs, who have played in 16 tournaments and 10 finals with five titles.  Kickoff is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.

UIW 1, ASU 1 (4-3 PK’s)
      Incarnate Word advanced to the final after a comeback shootout win over Angelo State.

      The Rambelles struck first as Katie Squires found the back of the net at the 15:38 mark.  The goal was set up by passes from Maggie Schaffer and Lauren Bateman.

      The Cardinals Amber Guenther tallied the equalizer in the 60th minute with an unassisted shot from the top of the box.

      The teams went back-and-forth for the remainder of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods to force a shootout (watch the video here).  The first three rounds of penalty kicks were even with both teams making the first two attempts before a miss in the third round.  UIW goalkeeper Heather Kowalik stopped ASU’s fourth shot followed by two Cardinal makes for the victory.

      UIW (9-7-1) is now 1-1 in the LSC championship tournament, while ASU (11-7-2) holds a 2-10 mark in tournament games.
 
WT 3, MSU 1
      West Texas A&M led Midwestern State for the entire game en route to a 3-1 victory.

      The Lady Buffs’ Leslie Briggs, the league’s Offensive Player of the Year, contributed to each of the scores with two goals and an assist.  Briggs opened the scoring at the 19:16 mark, and followed just under five minutes later with another goal (24:06), which were her 17th and 18th scores of the year. 

      MSU answered less than a minute later as Berklee Dressler tallied an unassisted goal (24:48)           .

      WTAMU added an insurance goal in the second half as Briggs’ pass from the far left side found Lindsay McHorse at the 61:32 mark.

      The Lady Buffs (12-6-1) improved to 20-10 in the LSC Championship Tournament, while the Mustangs (7-10-3) now hold a 17-14 mark in tournament action.
