Volleyball: All-Academic Awards announced

The Lone Star Conference recognized 12 student-athletes for their academic achievements Wednesday evening when league officials announced the volleyball academic awards at the LSC Championship banquet.

Angelo State, the LSC Champions, led the selections with three All-Academic honorees.  Three schools – West Texas A&M, Texas A&M-Commerce, and Incarnate Word - had two honorees.

Abilene Christian’s Caley Johnson, an accounting major, was tabbed LSC Academic Player of the Year.  She was a 2011 Capital One Academic All-District VI second team honoree and member of the LSC All-Academic team.  The junior setter/defensive specialist has played in 29 matches with 208 digs.

The All-Academic team is chosen by the league’s sports information directors, who select players on the basis of both athletic and academic achievement. To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must have played in at least 50 percent of team’s contests, reached sophomore athletic and academic standing (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen are not eligible), completed at least one full academic year at the nominating institution, and have a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade point average based on the 4.0 system for his/her entire collegiate career.

Johnson is joined on the All-Academic team by Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Ali Insell, WT’s Laura Iwuchukwu and Erin Dougherty, A&M-C’s Rachel Robertson and Kayla Bond, UIW’s Sarah Cardenas and Danielle Suarez, Midwestern State’s Kristan Aduddell, and ASU’s Emily Booth, Katie Coleman and Maddie Huth.
