LSC Soccer Weekly Release: UIW clinches men's title and sweeps weekly awards

LSC SOCCER
Lone Star Conference action continues this week, with the women concluding regular season play. On the men’s side, Incarnate Word secured its first LSC championship with a pair of wins.  The Cardinals also tied the school record for consecutive wins with 11 to date.
    The LSC Championship field has been set for the women, with this week’s remaining contests to determine the seeding and host for the event on November 1-2-4.  UIW and West Texas A&M are tied atop the standings, with the Cardinals holding the tiebreaker due to two wins over the Lady Buffs.  Joining the two teams for the tournament are Angelo State, Midwestern State, Abilene Christian and Texas Woman’s.
    LSC men’s soccer teams are 39-11-7 overall this season.  The squads are currently 5-3-1 combined versus Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams, and 10-2-1 against the Heartland Conference, which are the other conferences in the NCAA South Central Region.
    The women’s teams are 57-68-8 overall this season.  The squads are currently 2-9-1 combined versus Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams, and 2-4 against the Heartland Conference, which are the other conferences in the NCAA South Central Region.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Vincent Bailey, University of the Incarnate Word, JR, Midfielder, Southport, England, Savio
Bailey helped spark the Cardinals to a 2-0 week in LSC play. On Friday, he assisted on the team’s first goal at #17 West Texas A&M in a comeback, 3-2 victory. He came back with the game-winning goal and an assist in a 2-1 win at Eastern New Mexico that clinched the LSC Title, the first in school history. With the goal and two assists he upped his season totals to 14 goals and six assists.

MEN’S DEFENSIVE
James Nero, University of the Incarnate Word, JR, Charlotte, NC, Olympic
Nero played a key role for the Cardinals in securing the team’s first LSC title. He scored his first goal of the season in a 3-2 win at #17 West Texas A&M. Then, he was part of a defensive line that limited Eastern New Mexico to just five total shots in a 2-1 win.

WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Sydney Solomon, University of the Incarnate Word, JR, Forward, Schertz, Texas, Randolph HS
Solomon provided the Cardinals with an important victory over West Texas A&M that moved them into a tie for first place in the conference. She scored her first career hat-trick against the Lady Buffs in a 3-0 win on a total of three shots. She also fired two fired two shots on goal in the team’s 2-1 win over Eastern New Mexico.

WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Heather Kowalik, University of the Incarnate Word, FR, Boerne, Texas, Champion HS
Kowalik recorded her fourth shutout of the season in a key 3-0 win over West Texas A&M. She recorded three saves in the victory that put the Cardinals in a tie for first place in the LSC with the Lady Buffs. On Sunday, she improved to 8-4 on the year with a 2-1 win over Eastern New Mexico. She lowered her season GAA to 1.11.
