Women’s Golf: Tarleton claims fifth-straight regional title

The No. 3 Tarleton TexAnn golf team claimed its fifth-straight West Region title on Tuesday at Tascosa Country Club in Amarillo with senior Carla Cooper winning the individual title.

The TexAnns and Northeastern State’s Whitney McAteer will advance to the NCAA Division II National Championships on May 11-14 at The Meadows in Allendale, Mich.

Tarleton shot a 313 on the third day of competition to finish the three-round championship event with a 923 – 16 strokes ahead of St. Edward’s (939). Tarleton shot a 307 on Sunday and a 303 on Monday.

Cooper won the individual title by five strokes with a 222 (73-73-76). Jacqueline Lau and Melanie Tham tied for ninth with a 236 each. Lau shot an 80-81-75 while Tham shot 76-79-81. Katy Ward finished at No. 16 with a 237 (78-76-83) and Sharon Lau tied at No. 21 with a 240 (84-75-81).

NSU’s McAteer earned a spot at the national tournament as an individual. The sophomore won a playoff to move on after finishing tied for seventh with a 235 (76-77-82).

Western Washington finished third with a 943 while Central Oklahoma (951), Grand Canyon (954), Cal State-Monterey Bay (956), Northeastern State (970), Nebraska-Omaha (972) and Sonoma State (984) rounded out the field of competition.

Tarleton has now won eight of its 11 events this season, including the first four tournaments of the year and the last three as well. Cooper, the No. 1-ranked player in Division II, was the top-ranked golfer in Division II heading into the final round Tuesday. She has now won six individual titles this season.
