Softball: MSU tops WT twice to earn first NCAA Championship berth

Midwestern State picked up two wins over West Texas A&M to clinch the program's first NCAA Championship berth Saturday at the NCAA Division II South Central Super Regionals at Mustangs Park.

After dropping the opening game of the best-of-three series Friday, the Mustangs prevailed in game two 8-2 to force the decisive game.  MSU led the final game 3-2 before the offense erupted for eight runs in the seventh frame en route to an 11-2 victory.

In the seventh inning, nine consecutive Mustang hitters reached including solo homers from Courtney Bingham and Kim Jerrick and a grand slam by Mallory Mooney.
 
MSU took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning, using three walks along with a RBI single by Amanda Potysman and a two-run Bingham double down the right-field line.
 
But WT answered in the fifth frame after a Mustangs' miscue to plate two runs on a Meghan Brown run-scoring single to right field and a wild pitch.
 
MSU (52-12) opens the 2011 NCAA Division II Championship against top-ranked Alabama-Huntsville Thursday night at the Moyer Complex in Salem, Va. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m (Central Time).

The Lady Buffs memorable season ends at 50-18.

MSU 8, WT 2

Midwestern State forced a third game in the NCAA Division II South Central Super Regional with an 8-2 victory over West Texas A&M at Mustangs Park.
 
The Mustangs (51-12) collected 17 hits against the Lady Buffs (50-17).
 
MSU got on the scoreboard in the third inning on a Mallory Mooney’s 14th home run of the season that drove in Nikki Duff.
 
After plating a run in the fifth on an Amanda Potysman RBI single, the Mustangs broke the game open in the sixth.
 
MSU loaded the bases for Kim Jerrick who singled to drive in one run. Alyson Reynolds followed with a two RBI double to center and Potysman added a sacrifice fly for a four run inning.
 
The Mustangs added one more in the seventh when McKenzie Sickler doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on Mooney’s RBI single.
 
MSU pitcher Kristina Gutierrez (22-4) was nearly perfect entering the seventh inning, but lost the shutout on a two-run home run by Meghan Slattery, her 14th of the season.
