Tennis academic awards announced

For the second straight year, Midwestern State’s Vjekoslav Stipanic and Northeastern State’s Michaela Romanova were tabbed Men’s and Women’s Academic Players of the Year, respectively, to highlight the Lone Star Conference tennis academic awards announced Thursday by league officials.

Stipanic earned Academic Player of the Year acclaim for his success on the courts and in the classroom. He led the team which also included teammate Bo Zaputovic, East Central’s Andres Nunez and Carlos Muro, Cameron’s Thomas Peixoto and Abilene Christian’s Eldad Campbell.

Romanova claimed Academic Player of the Year honors on the women’s side for her work on the court and in the classroom. She was joined on the team by fellow RiverHawk Karoline Cichon, CU’s Amanda Moberg and Julia Puckhaber, Tarleton’s Mariana Freitas and Central Oklahoma’s Julia Shviadok.

To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.30 grade point average and have reached sophomore status both athletically and academically. The Academic Player of Year award and All-Academic Team are selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league's sports information directors voting on the basis of both academic and athletic achievement.
