Tarleton State’s Carla Cooper finished with a flurry of birdies to take the individual lead and give the TexAnns an eight-stroke advantage after the first round at the Lone Star Conference Women’s Golf Championships. The annual league event, which features 12 women's teams, is being held at The Republic Golf Club in San Antonio.
The field played in temperatures reaching the low 90’s Monday at the par 71, 5,867-yard course.
Tarleton finished at three-over par 287 for the lead over Incarnate Word and Midwestern State. The Cardinals, competing in the LSC for the first year, posted a 295 (+11), while the Mustangs ended at 303 (+19).
Northeastern State and Texas A&M-Commerce are tied for fourth place with identical total scores of 305.
Cooper had two birdies on the front nine before closing with a three-hole birdie run on 15, 16 and 17 to finish at three-under (68). UIW’s Jessica Cornish is just one-stroke back at 69, followed by A&M-C’s Chantry McMahan and MSU’s Kendra Whittley at 70.
On the 8th hole, the Cardinals Joanna De Sa Peirera recorded a hole-in-one. She used her pitching wedge to ace the par-3, 105-yard hole.
