Tennis Weekly Release: UIW's Ballenger, MSU's Lewis earn weekly awards

Incarnate Word's David Ballenger and Midwestern State's Abbie Lewis picked up Lone Star Conference Player of the Week honors for their performances, league officials announced today.

TENNIS ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
MEN’S
David Ballenger, University of the Incarnate Word, Jr., Nacogdoches, Texas, Nacogdoches HS
Ballenger was undefeated in three matches last week. In two non-conference tilts against Newman and Dallas Baptist he played at No. 5 and 4 singles, respectively, and won both times in straight sets, losing three games in only one set. In the long LSC match at Southeastern Oklahoma, Ballenger was at No. 2 singles and won in straight sets again. In doubles action, he and his partner played at No. 2 all week with three victories.

WOMEN’S
Abbie Lewis, Midwestern State University, Fr., Wichita Falls, Texas, Rider HS
Lewis helped lead Midwestern State to a 3-0 week with a win over No. 20 Central Oklahoma at home and triumphs over Washburn and Northwest Missouri State on the road. She teamed with Leah Roberts to take all three matches at No. 2 doubles, then took both matches played at No. 4 by beating Anto Rossini of Central Oklahoma 6-3, 6-2, and Alyssa Castillo of Washburn 6-3, 6-2. MSU has won three straight and seven of their last nine matches.

FIRST SERVE
Cameron men’s and women’s tennis coach James Helvey garnered his 600th career win on Saturday after both Aggie teams picked up wins over St. Edward’s.
