Tennis: Three teams advance to national tournament

The Abilene Christian men’s and women’s tennis teams along with Northeastern State’s women’s squad advanced to the NCAA Division II Tennis Championships after winning their respective preliminary-round South Central Region tournaments.

The Wildcats and RiverHawks advance to the finals in Altamonte Springs, Florida, hosted by the Central Florida Sports Commission and Rollins College, May 12-15.

The ACU women blanked Incarnate Word, 5-0, winning all three doubles matches over the Cardinals as they claimed their 23rd women's regional title and 15th straight.  The Wildcats (27-7) are making their 15th straight appearance in the national tournament against Lynn (23-3).

ACU topped Washburn 5-0, while UIW beat Central Oklahoma, 5-3, in the opening matches in Abilene, Texas.

NSU earned a spot in the Round of 16 with a 5-1 victory over Cameron.  The RiverHawks (15-4) will face undefeated Armstrong Atlantic (29-0).

NSU topped Midwestern State, 5-1, and Cameron edged Tarleton State 5-4, in first round action in Tahlequah, Okla.

ACU’s men topped UIW, 5-4, in a match that came down to the last singles event.  The Wildcats trailed the Cardinals before wins at No. 4 and 6 singles punched their ticket to their fourth straight national tournament appearance.  The win sends ACU to the national tournament for the 12th time overall, fourth straight time and seventh time since 2001.  The Wildcats will begin play at nationals against Hawaii Pacific (19-2).
