Tarleton State, Abilene Christian and Cameron all posted
wins on day two of the Lone Star Conference Baseball Championship
at Crutcher Scott Field in Abilene, Texas.
Tarleton State 6, Southeastern Oklahoma
2
Tarleton State banged out two home runs against Southeastern
Oklahoma State and Mike Ramirez pitched effectively into the
seventh inning Sunday as the Texans beat the Savage Storm, 6-2, in
the Lone Star Conference Baseball Championship at Crutcher Scott
Field.
The win pushes the Texans to 26-24 on the season and into Monday's
3 p.m. game. The Savage Storm, meanwhile, falls to 32-21 and
could be in trouble in terms of a bid for an at-large bid to the
NCAA regional tournament.
Tarleton pushed two runs across in the third on a single by
Chris Casazza and a sacrifice fly by Zane Hensley. Casazza
then tacked on another run in the fifth when he blasted his 16th
home run of the season over the wall in left-centerfield.
But the Savage Storm pushed across two runs in the top of the
seventh on a single by Robbie Morris.
But Tarleton designated hitter Andrew Kapple put the game out of
reach in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out, two-run home run
to left-centerfield to make it 5-2. The Texans then tacked on
another run in the eighth to make it 6-2.
Ramirez scattered eight hits and one walk over 6 1/3 innings and
struck out three Texans as he picked up the win to improve to
3-0. Nathan Lewis went the final 2 2/3 innings to pick up his
ninth save.
Abilene Christian 16, Texas A&M-Kingsville
7
The ACU Wildcats pounded out 15 hits and came up with five
multiple-run innings Sunday afternoon as they knocked off Texas
A&M-Kingsville, 16-7, in a Lone Star Conference Baseball
Championship game at Crutcher Scott Field.
The win pushes the Wildcats to 44-13 on the season and puts them
into the 11 a.m. winner's bracket game against Cameron. The
Javelinas, meanwhile, see their season end at 28-25.
Three of the Wildcats' hits were home runs as Ian Tomkins hit a
two-run shot and Will Calhoun and Chris Hall added solo
shots. ACU trailed 1-0 after the first two innings, but
scored six runs in the third, two in the fifth, three in the sixth,
two in the seventh and two in the eighth.
The game turned in the third inning when the Wildcats finally
broke through against Kingsville starter David de Leon with six
runs on five hits. After leaving the bases loaded in the
second inning the Wildcats were able to get the lead in the
third.
With one out, Hall got the inning started with a double
before Calhoun drove him in with the game-tying run on a
ground-rule double to left-centerfield. After Travis Latz was
hit by a pitch and Willie Uechi walked to load the bases, Bret
Bochsler singled to drive in Calhoun to make it 2-1.
Cameron Watten then fought off a 2-2 pitch and drove it into right
field for a two-run single that scored Uechi and Latz to make it a
4-1 game. Clint Bowker then drove in a run on a fielder's
choice and Aaron Oliver plated the final run of the inning with an
infield hit.
Tomkins hammered a two-run home run in the fifth to make it an 8-2
ACU lead before the Wildcats essentially put the game away with
three runs in the sixth as Calhoun homered and Uechi and Bochsler
each drove in runs with back-to-back doubles.
After Kingsville scored four times in the sixth the Wildcats
scored twice in the seventh, twice more in the eighth and once in
the ninth to finish off the Javelinas.
Aaron Lambrix went 5 2/3 innings for the Wildcats, picking up the
win as he improved to 9-0. He scattered eight hits and walked
three while allowing six earned runs. Ryan McCabe, Josh
Crockett and Jordan Hartley combined to throw 3 1/3 innings of
one-run baseball.

Monday at 11 a.m. against 11th-ranked ACU. The Rams (32-25)
will play a loser's bracket game at 3 p.m. Monday against Tarleton
