Softball: MSU, ASU advance to Super Regional

Midwestern State and Angelo State each won their respective NCAA Division II Softball South Central Regional and will play this week in a best-of-three Super Regional series.

The Mustangs and Rambelles went undefeated at the four-team events to advance to the Super Regional to be played in Wichita Falls, Texas, May 21-22, with game one set for Friday at 5 p.m.  The series concludes on Saturday with game two at 1 p.m. and the if-necessary game at 3:30 p.m. if needed.

MSU was a 6-0 winner over West Texas A&M in the finals as Brittney Tanner delivered her sixth shutout of the season and her second one-hit gem of the season to improve to 21-2 on the season. She notched 12 strikeouts, walked one and limited the Lady Buffs to a Kim LeComte double to lead off the fourth inning.

The Mustangs matched the Lone Star Conference single season win mark by improving to 53-8.  West Texas A&M closes the season with a 45-18 record.

ASU (46-12) completed its perfect run with a 5-3 win over host Emporia State (50-14).  The Rambelles scored the game-winner in the top of the seventh as Sarah DeMoss led off with her team-leading third triple of the season.  Two batters later, Alix Dean collected her seventh RBI of the regional as she plated DeMoss with a single up the middle, giving ASU a 4-3 lead. Kaycee Taylor followed up with a double to left field, scoring Dean from first base, to give the Rambelles an insurance run.

MSU and ASU have played five times this season including three extra-inning affairs with the Mustangs holding a 3-2 advantage.

The winner of the Super Regional advances to the NCAA Division II Championships to be played May 27-31 at Heritage Park in St. Joseph, Mo. hosted by Missouri Western State.
