LSC Baseball Championship: CU, ASU and ACU triumph on day one

Cameron, Angelo State and Abilene Christian each won their opening games of the Lone Star Conference Baseball Championship at Crutcher Scott Field in Abilene, Texas.

Cameron 7, Texas A&M-Kingsville 6

Tom Dicker's two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning Saturday morning drove in the game-winning run as Cameron squeaked past Texas A&M-Kingsville, 7-6, in the first game of the Lone Star Conference Baseball Championship at ACU's Crutcher Scott Field.

The win pushes the Aggies to 28-17 overall, while the Javelinas fall to 28-24.  Cameron will play again Sunday at 7 p.m. while the Javelinas will play in a possible elimination game Sunday at 3 p.m.

The Aggies held a comfortable 6-2 lead going to the top of the eighth before the Javelinas rallied against Cameron pitchers Logan Grimes and Ricky Cramer.

The first three Javelinas of the eighth reached against Grimes, who was then lifted in favor of Cramer.  He got the first two batters he faced to pop out before walking in a run to make it 6-3.

Then on the first pitch that Cody Stigall saw from Cramer he drilled a bases-clearing double to left-centerfield to tie the game at 6-6.

But in the bottom of the eighth the Aggies worked their way to runners at first and second with no outs.  After a fielder's choice erased the lead runner and a strikeout of Alex Lyons gave the Aggies two outs, Dicker stepped in and delivered an RBI single to drive in Codi Harshman with the eventual game-winning run.

Cramer (6-4) retired the Javelinas in order in the ninth to nail down the victory for the Aggies.

Angelo State 23, Southeastern Oklahoma 10

Angelo State catcher Chris Adamson put on a prodigious power show Saturday evening at Crutcher Scott Field as he led the Rams to a 23-10 blowout win over Southeastern Oklahoma State in a Lone Star Conference Baseball Championship game at Crutcher Scott Field.

Adamson hit three home runs to tie a single-game school record and drove in 10 run to set ASU's single-game record.  He started his barrage with a solo home run in the third, an RBI fielder's choice in the fourth and grand slams in the fifth and ninth innings.

The win pushes the Rams to 32-24 on the season, while the Savage Storm fall to 32-20.  Angelo State will play at 7 p.m. Sunday against Cameron, while Southeastern will play at 11 a.m. Sunday in an elimination game against the loser of Saturday's late game between Tarleton State and ACU.

The Rams and Savage Storm combined for 33 runs, 35 hits, 17 walks, six hit batters, four errors and 13 different pitchers, including nine by Southeastern.

Aside from Adamson's heroics, Clay Puckett was 5 for 7 with one RBI, Keith Towne and Travis Lites each drove in three runs, and Isaac Garcia had three hits (one home run) and drove in a pair of runs.

Scott Crook went five innings in a starting role to pick up the win for the Rams, while Jimmy Johnson went just 4 1/3 innings for the Savage Storm and fell to 8-1 with the loss.

Abilene Christian 10, Tarleton State 3

Aaron Oliver has been Abilene Christian’s offensive catalyst all season, and he was back at it again Saturday night as he propelled his team to a 10-3 win over Tarleton State in the Lone Star Conference Baseball Championship at Crutcher Scott Field.

Oliver was 2 for 4 with three runs scored and three RBI as the Wildcats won their fifth straight tournament game dating back to last year's 4-0 run to the championship.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 43-13 overall and move into a 3 p.m. game Sunday against Texas A&M-Kingsville, a 7-6 loser to Cameron earlier Saturday.  Tarleton State, meanwhile, will play a loser's bracket game at 11 a.m. Sunday against Southeastern Oklahoma State.

Tarleton State took three of four games from ACU last weekend, and the Texans picked up right where they left off Saturday night, jumping on ACU starting pitcher Cameron Aspaas for three runs in the first three innings.  Chris Casazza had a solo home run to lead off the second inning, and then the Texans tacked on two more runs in the third to make it 3-0.

But that's when Oliver stepped in and changed the complexion of the game.  With one out and one on, he drilled a ball deep to right field that clanged off the scoreboard for a two-run home run that cut the Texans' lead to 3-2.

ACU would go on to score two runs in the fourth, two in the fifth, two in the sixth and two in the eighth as the Wildcats scored 10 unanswered runs.  Ian Tomkins got the game tied in the fourth with a sacrifice fly that scored Willie Uechi, and Bret Bochsler scored a couple of pitches later on a wild pitch to gave ACU a 4-3 lead.

Bochsler had a clutch two-out, two-run single in the fifth to make it 6-3 and the Wildcats tacked on two more in the sixth on an RBI triple by Oliver and an RBI single by Will Calhoun.  ACU scored its final two runs in the eighth when Bowker scored on a double steal and Oliver scored on a wild pitch.

Aspaas went seven strong innings, scattering seven hits and not allowing a walk as he picked up the win to improve to 6-4.  Josh Crockett pitched a scoreless eighth and Brad Rutherford a dominant ninth to wrap it up for the Wildcats.
