Tennis Championships set for Friday and Saturday

Central Oklahoma is the host of the 2010 Lone Star Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis championships which begin Friday morning at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.
    Men’s first-round play begins with East Central taking on Southeastern Oklahoma at 8 a.m.  The winner moves on to face top-seed Abilene Christian in one semifinal, while Cameron and Midwestern State battle in the other semifinal. Both matches begin at 1 p.m.  The championship is slated for Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
    The women’s championship kicks off Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. with four first-round matchups. Central Oklahoma faces CU and Tarleton State tangles with MSU, while ACU takes on SE and Northeastern State plays ECU.  The winners of the opening round contests move on to the semifinals Friday afternoon starting at 2 p.m.  The women’s championship is also slated for Saturday with a 9:30 a.m. first-serve time.

The ACU women are 22-7 on the season and ranked No. 7 in the nation and No. 1 in the NCAA Division II South Central Region.  ... The Wildcats are the two-time defending LSC champion and will be seeking their 22nd conference title this weekend. ... The Wildcats have been dominant within the conference and region this season, posting 18 shutout wins, including five in seven conference matches.  ... ACU, in fact, lost just three of a possible 63 conference matches as the Wildcats finished 7-0 in conference play. ... On the men’s side, the Wildcats (14-11 on the season) haven’t been as dominant as their counterparts on the women’s side, but they are coming off a dominating 9-0 win at Cameron last Wednesday that clinched the regular-season championship. ... ACU was 4-0 in conference play, winning 31 of 36 matches with its only close match on the season a 5-4 win over East Central on March 26.  The Wildcats enter the tournament ranked No. 22 in the country and No. 3 in the region. ... ACU upset defending champion Cameron last season, and this year will be trying to win its second straight title and 11th overall since 1988.

Cameron   
Neither of Cameron’s nationally-ranked tennis teams were in action last week as both teams continue preparation for this week’s Lone Star Conference Championship tournament in Oklahoma City. Both teams travel the short distance north on Interstate 44 this Friday-Saturday (April 23-24) to compete for the LSC Title... CU’s #33 women’s squad last took on Abilene Christian at home (April 14) and lost 9-0... CU’s #23 men’s team ended their regular season last Thursday (April 14) with a 9-0 loss to ACU... The Cameron men finish the regular season with a 16-8 record, while the Aggie women end the regular season with a 14-7 record. Both teams have already clinched bids to the NCAA Regional Championship tournament, regardless of their performances at the LSC Championship this weekend.

The TexAnns’ regular-season finale was cancelled due to the rain in Stephenville this past weekend. Tarleton heads into the championships with a 12-7 overall record and 4-3 mark in LSC play.
