Tennis academic awards announced

Midwestern State’s Vjekoslav Stipanic and Northeastern State’s Michaela Romanova were named Men’s and Women’s Academic Players of the Year, respectively, to highlight the Lone Star Conference tennis academic awards announced Thursday by league officials.

Stipanic earned Academic Player of the Year acclaim for his success on the courts and in the classroom.  He led the team which also included Mustangs teammate Daniel McMullan, Cameron’s Thomas Peixoto and Diego Troiano, East Central’s Andres Nunez and Abilene Christian’s Bryan Joiner.

Romanova claimed Academic Player of the Year honors on the women’s side for her work on the court and in the classroom.  She was joined on the team by fellow RiverHawks Karolina Cichon and Zuzanna Osinska, ACU’s Natalie Friend, Central Oklahoma’s Julia Shviadok and ECU’s Julia Arguello.

In addition to these six men and six women being named to the LSC's All-Academic Teams, four men and eight women were named to the LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll in recognition of their excellence in the classroom. In all, 24 student-athletes were distinguished.

To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.30 grade point average and have reached sophomore status both athletically and academically. The Academic Player of Year award and All-Academic Team are selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league's sports information directors voting on the basis of both academic and athletic achievement. All qualifying student-athletes not selected for the All-Academic Team are then named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll.
