Golf: Tarleton’s Cooper tops women’s academic honors

Tarleton State’s Carla Cooper was named the Academic Player of the Year to headline the list of women’s golf academic honorees announced by Lone Star Conference officials Sunday night at the championship awards banquet.

Cooper, a pre-physical therapy major from Arlington, Texas, was joined by Central Oklahoma’s Raelynn Farthing, West Texas A&M’s Sara Coe, Cameron’s Marrik Wooten and TexAnn teammate Melanie Tham.

Cooper has won four tournaments this year with a 74.5 scoring average.  The top-rated player in the West Region and No. 4 in the country, she has finished in the top-10 of every tournament to help the TexAnns win six team titles.

Cooper, Farthing and Wooten are repeat picks to the All-Academic Team.

In addition to the five players on the All-Academic Team, 13 more gained recognition on the LSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.30 grade point average and be at least a sophomore, both academically and athletically. The Academic Player of Year award and All-Academic Team are selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league’s sports information directors voting on the basis of both academic and athletic achievement. All qualifying student-athletes not selected for the All-Academic Team are then named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
