Seven Lone Star Conference basketball teams, with four on the
women's side and three on the men's, were selected to continue
their season at the South Central Regional basketball tournament
announced by the NCAA tonight.
West Texas A&M was selected to host the women's
tournament March 12, 13 and 15 at the First United Bank Center in
Canyon, Texas. The Lady Buffs earned the league's automatic
qualification after winning the LSC Championship Sunday
afternoon. Joining WTAMU, the top seed, in the field is No. 3
seed Northeastern State, No. 5 Tarleton State and No. 6 Central
Oklahoma.
The Lady Buffs will face No. 8 seed St. Mary's in
the first round, while No. 3 NSU and No. 6 UCO square off and
Tarleton faces No. 4 Emporia State. Rounding out the women's
bracket is Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association
champion and second-seed Washburn against No. 7 Central Missouri.
The regional champion will advance to the Women's
Elite Eight March 23, 24 and 26 at St. Joseph Civic Arena in St.
Joseph, Mo.
The men's regional will be hosted by Midwestern
State, who won the men's LSC title and automatic qualification
Saturday night, in Wichita Falls, Texas, March 13, 14 and 16.
Joining top-seed MSU in the field is No. 4 Tarleton
and No. 6 UCO. The Mustangs play No. 8 Incarnate Word in the
opening round, while the Texans play No. 5 Nebraska-Omaha and the
Bronchos take on third-seeded Fort Hays State. No. 2 Central
Missouri goes against No. 7 Missouri Western in the other
quarterfinal match-up.
The men's tournament culminates with the
quarterfinals through finals being played at the MassMutual Center
in Springfield, Massachusetts, March 24, 25 and 27.
